How Facebook is using AI to combat COVID-19 misinformation and detect ‘hateful memes’

By Nick Statt

Facebook on Monday released a new report detailing how it uses a combination of artificial intelligence and human fact-checkers and moderators to enforce its community standards. The report — called the Community Standards Enforcement Report, which usually encompasses data and findings from the prior three to six months — has a large focus on AI this time around.

That’s because Facebook is relying more on the technology to help moderate its platform during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is preventing the company from using its usual third-party moderator firms because those firms’ employees are not allowed to access sensitive Facebook data from home computers.

That said, Facebook says the data it’s compiled so far doesn’t contain any larger trends in its enforcement or in offending behavior on its platform because the pandemic hit so late in its reporting period. “This report includes data only through March 2020 so it does not reflect the full impact of the changes we made during the pandemic,” writes Guy Rosen, the company’s vice president of integrity, in a blog post. “We anticipate we’ll see the impact of those changes in our next report, and possibly beyond, and we will be transparent about them.’

Given the state of the world, Facebook’s report does contain new information about how the company is specifically combating coronavirus-related misinformation and other forms of platform abuse, like price gouging on Facebook Marketplace, using its AI tools. Facebook put warning labels on 50 million coronavirus-related posts last month

“During the month of April, we put warning labels on about 50 million posts related to COVID-19 on Facebook, based on around 7,500 articles by our independent fact-checking partners,” the company said in a separate blog post, penned by a group of its research scientists and software engineers, about its ongoing COVID-19 misinformation efforts published today. “Since March 1st, we’ve removed more than 2.5 million pieces of content for the sale of masks, hand sanitizers, surface disinfecting wipes and COVID-19 test kits. But these are difficult challenges, and our tools are far from perfect. Furthermore, the adversarial nature of these challenges means the work will never be done.”

Facebook says its labels are working: 95 percent of the time, someone who is warned that a piece of content contains misinformation will decide not to view it anyway. But producing those labels across its enormous platform is proving to be a challenge. For one, Facebook is discovering that a fair amount of misinformation as well as hate speech is now showing up in images and videos, not just text or article links.

“We have found that a substantial percentage of hate speech on Facebook globally occurs in photos or videos,” the company says in a separate hate speech-specific blog post about its recent moderation findings and research. “As with other content, hate speech also can be multimodal: A meme might use text and image together to attack a particular group of people, for example.”

This is a tougher challenge for AI to tackle, the company admits. Not only do AI-trained models have a harder time parsing a meme image or a video due to complexities like wordplay and language differences, but that software must also then be trained to find duplicates or only marginally modified versions of that content as it spreads across Facebook. But this is precisely what Facebook says it’s achieved with what it calls SimSearchNet, a multiyear effort across many divisions within the company to train an AI model how to recognize both copies of the original image and those that are near-duplicates and have perhaps one word in the line of text changed. “We have found that a substantial percentage of hate speech on Facebook globally occurs in photos or videos.”

“Once independent fact-checkers have determined that an image contains misleading or false claims about coronavirus, SimSearchNet, as part of our end-to-end image indexing and matching system, is able to recognize near-duplicate matches so we can apply warning labels,” the company says. “This system runs on every image uploaded to Instagram and Facebook and checks against task-specific human-curated databases. This accounts for billions of images being checked per day, including against databases set up to detect COVID-19 misinformation.”

Facebook uses the example of a misleading image modeled after a broadcast news graphic with a line of overlaid text reading, “COVID-19 is found in toilet paper.” The image is from a known peddler of fake news called Now8News, and the graphic has since been debunked by Snopes and other fact-checking organizations. But Facebook says it had to train its AI to differentiate between the original image and a modified one that says, “COVID-19 isn’t found in toilet paper.”

The goal is to help reduce the spread of duplicate images while also not inadvertently labeling genuine posts or those that don’t meet the bar for misinformation. This is a big problem on Facebook where many politically motivated pages and organizations or those that simply feed off partisan outrage will take photographs, screenshots, and other images and alter them to change their meaning. An AI model that knows the difference and can label one as misinformation and the other as genuine is a meaningful step forward, especially when it can then do the same to any duplicate or near-duplicate content in the future without roping in non-offending images in the process.

TORONTO, May 11, 2020 — Datametrex AI Limited (the “Company” or “Datametrex”) (TSXV: DM, FSE: D4G, OTC: DTMXF) is pleased to announce that it has secured non-exclusive rights to COVID-19 test kits with Health Canada (“HC”) approval, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Saudi Food & Drug Authority (“SFDA”) approval, and CE marking certification (“CE”) for European Economic Area (“EEA”) countries, which covers the 27 member states of the EU, the 4 members of EFTA, plus Turkey and the United Kingdom under Brexit.

It is a nucleic test kit providing results in less than two hours that verifies the RdRp gene for SARS-CoV-2 with real-time qPCR kit via a nasopharyngeal swab and oropharyngeal swab, specifically targeting the E gene sequences of COVID-19. The kits are made by 1drop Inc. (“1drop”) in South Korea, and are immediately ready for sales orders in Canada.

The Company’s ability to fulfill any purchase order for COVID-19 test kits is subject to the availability of inventory at the time of order. Due to the extraordinarily high demand for COVID-19 tests, there is volatility in the supply chain, and available supply may fluctuate on a daily basis.

Datametrex anticipates that it will have little or no upfront costs associated with importing and selling these test kits. Assuming these test kits are purchased by the Canadian Government, the manufacturer will ship the test kits directly to the Canadian government or hospitals, and Datametrex will not be involved in the shipping, warehousing, or distribution process.

The Company did not pay consideration to the manufacturer to obtain sales rights.

#AI can distinguish between bots and humans based on #Twitter activity – SPONSOR: Datametrex AI Limited $DM.ca

AI can distinguish between bots and humans based on Twitter activity

  • Artificial intelligence is being used to spot the difference between human users and fake accounts on Twitter
  • Researchers found that human users replied between four and five times more often to other tweets than bots did
  • Real users gradually become more interactive, with the fraction of replies increasing over the course of an hour-long session of Twitter use

By Donna Lu

Artificial intelligence is being used to spot the difference between human users and fake accounts on Twitter.

Emilio Ferrara at the University of Southern California and his colleagues have trained an AI to detect bots on Twitter based on differences in patterns of activity between real and fake accounts.

The team analysed two separate data sets of Twitter users, which had been classified either manually or by a pre-existing algorithm as either bot or human.

The manually verified data set consisted of 8.4 million tweets from 3500 human accounts, and 3.4 million tweets from 5000 bots.

The researchers found that human users replied between four and five times more often to other tweets than bots did. Real users gradually become more interactive, with the fraction of replies increasing over the course of an hour-long session of Twitter use.

The length of tweets by human users also decreased as sessions progressed. “The amount of information that is exchanged diminishes,” says Ferrara. He believes that the change may result from a cognitive depletion over time, in which people become less likely to expend mental effort composing original content.

Bots, on the other hand, show no changes in their interactivity or the length of information they tweet over time.

Datametrex $DM.ca Obtains Rights to Sell #COVID19 Tests From Two Additional South Korean Manufacturers

Posted by AGORACOM-JC at 7:32 AM on Wednesday, May 6th, 2020
  • Secured non-exclusive rights to sell COVID-19 test kits from two additional South Korean manufacturers, including a kit that is U.S. Food & Drug Administration
  • Approved under Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Emergency Use Authorizations for Medical Devices for the United States, and CE marking certification (for European Economic Area countries, which covers the 27 member states of the EU, the 4 members of EFTA, plus Turkey and the United Kingdom under Brexit

TORONTO, May 06, 2020 – Datametrex AI Limited (the “Company” or “Datametrex”) (TSXV: DM, FSE: D4G, OTC: DTMXF) is pleased to announce that it has secured non-exclusive rights to sell COVID-19 test kits from two additional South Korean manufacturers, including a kit that is U.S. Food & Drug Administration (“FDA”) approved under Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Emergency Use Authorizations for Medical Devices (“EUA”) for the United States, and CE marking certification (“CE”) for European Economic Area (“EEA”) countries, which covers the 27 member states of the EU, the 4 members of EFTA, plus Turkey and the United Kingdom under Brexit.

According to each of the manufacturers, these test kits made are both Nucleic Acid based, which Health Canada is prioritizing the review of. Each of the manufacturers’ test kits have been submitted to Health Canada approval on a fast track basis and, until such approval is granted, these tests may not be sold or used in Canada. The Company is currently working closely with Health Canada to have the approval of the test kits fast tracked. An Interim Order Request for Health Canada has been submitted for 300,000 kits immediately and an additional 100,000 weekly thereafter.

One of the test kits, manufactured by Seasun Biomaterials (“Seasun”) Inc. of South Korea, was authorized on April 27, 2020 by the FDA in the United States for Emergency Use under the EUA by authorized laboratories and has also been approved for use in the EEA with CE marking certification. With regard to the FDA authorization: (1) this test has not been FDA cleared or approved; (2) this test has been authorized by the FDA only for the detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2, not for any other viruses or pathogens; and (3) this test is only authorized for the duration of the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of emergency use of in vitro diagnostics for detection and/or diagnosis of COVID-19 under Section 564(b)(1) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360bbb-3(b)(1), unless the authorization is terminated or revoked sooner.

Seasun claims that the average number of specimens that can be tested in a 12 hour period with their U-TOP COVID-19 Real-Time Detection Kit is 3,400. Seasun advises this is the equivalent of approximately 283 tests per hour, and the kit uses dual-labeled peptide nucleic acid probes to detect two distinct regions in ORF1ab and one region in N gene of the SARS-CoV-2 genome in oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swab specimens, anterior nasal and mid-turbinate nasal swabs, nasopharyngeal wash/aspirate or nasal aspirate specimens, and sputum. The test runs on any authorized RT-PCR instrument and can be performed by any lab CLIA-certified to perform high-complexity tests.

Seasun is an in vitro diagnostic company that develops molecular diagnostic platforms of infection diseases, cancer as well as genetic and epigenetic disorders. Seasun develops and commercializes innovative real-time PCR-based diagnostic platforms through the development of its proprietary technologies to provide more advanced molecular diagnostic services. Seasun’s test kits will be distributed by its third party distributor, which Datametrex has agreements in place with for distribution globally. The other manufacturer that Datametrex has obtained sales rights from has requested not to be named publicly at this time.

The Company announced on April 21, 2020 the appointments of Dr. Joseph Curtis and Dr. Lisa Palleson-Stallan to the advisory board in anticipation of securing US FDA EUA approval on the test kits. Selling into the US market requires infrastructure and a qualified contact person that can assist not only in identifying opportunities to sell the test kits but also with the compliance requirements. The Company is continuing to work with Health Canada with respect to the application for approval of previously announced iONEBIO Inc. COVID-19 test kits.

“Having seen the urgent need for COVID-19 test kits, Datametrex is doing everything it can to help Canada combat COVID-19 and flatten the curve. In the meantime, having FDA under EUA approved test kits allow us to help our neighbours to the south and any Canadian company with operations in the US and Europe,” says Marshall Gunter, CEO of the Company.

The Company’s ability to fulfill any purchase order for COVID-19 test kits is subject to the availability of inventory at the time of order. Due to the extraordinarily high demand for COVID-19 test, there is volatility in the supply chain and available supply may fluctuate on a daily basis. Datametrex anticipates that it will have little or no upfront costs associated with importing and selling these test kits. Assuming Health Canada approves the test kits and they are subsequently purchased by the Canadian government, the manufacturer will ship the test kits directly to the Canadian government or hospitals, and Datametrex will not be involved in the shipping, warehousing or distribution process.

The Company did not pay consideration to either of the manufacturers to obtain sales rights. Seasun’s application to have its test approved by Health Canada were submitted directly by Seasun, while Datametrex submitted an application for approval with respect to the other manufacturer’s tests.

Google acts tough on ‘bad ads’; blocked nearly 1 million advertisers in 2019

Google said since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, it has been closely monitoring advertiser behavior to protect users from ads looking to take advantage of the crisis.

Google said since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, it has been closely monitoring advertiser behavior.

  • Google on Monday said it disabled and eliminated 2.7 billion ‘bad ads’-more than 5,000 poor ads every minute-in 2019, and banned nearly a million advertisers responsible for policy breaches as part of its efforts to protect consumers from deceptive advertising.

The tech giant also noticed that fake advertisements for in-demand items such as face masks had a dramatic increase in the COVID-19 pandemic that claimed lakhs of life globally.

“Preserving the integrity of the ads on our platforms, as we’re doing during the COVID-19 outbreak, is a continuation of the work we do every day to minimise content that violates our policies and stop malicious actors. We have thousands of people working across our teams to make sure we’re protecting our users and enabling a safe ecosystem for advertisers and publishers…” Google has informed me in a blogpost.

The post, written by Google Vice President of Product Management Advertising Protection and Safety Scott Spencer, noted that in 2019, 2.7 billion bad advertising were blocked and taken out.

“We also suspended nearly 1 million advertiser accounts for policy violations. On the publisher side, we terminated over 1.2 million accounts and removed ads from over 21 million web pages that are part of our publisher network for violating our policies,” the blog said.

It added that terminating accounts-not just removing an individual ad or page-is a particularly effective enforcement tool that Google uses if advertisers or publishers commit egregious policy breaches or have a history of policy breaches.

Google said since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, it has been closely monitoring advertiser behavior to protect users from ads looking to take advantage of the crisis. Google said it has been closely tracking advertiser activity since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak to protect consumers from advertisers that are trying to take advantage of the crisis.

Google noted that there is a dedicated COVID-19 task force operating round the clock that has developed new detection technologies and has also improved existing compliance tools to avoid bad actors.

Falling for China’s Fake Covid-19 News Was Dangerous and Preventable

  • The Chinese government’s consistent record of censorship and manipulation of information during public health crises is in the public domain
  • It’s well documented
  • We would do well to look beyond the official Chinese numbers, rely on the information we can trust, and focus on what’s most important: containing and eradicating the deadly global pandemic.

As Covid-19 continues to cut a grim path across the globe, debates continue to rage about who is to blame. In one of his many moves to shift accountability for his own inept response to the crisis, US president Donald Trump said he would place a hold on funding for the World Health Organization, alleging that the agency “willingly took China’s assurances to face value” and “pushed China’s misinformation.”

But the truth is that everyone—the US government, the WHO, journalists, public health officials, and others—should have known better than to trust Beijing’s claims, whether in its initial dismissal of the possibility of human-to-human transmission, or in its current reports of infection and death-toll numbers. In China’s one-party authoritarian system, officials suppressing information and manipulating data for propaganda or career advancement is nothing new, and likely won’t change any time soon.

The Chinese government’s consistent record of censorship and manipulation of information during public health crises is in the public domain. It’s well documented. We would do well to look beyond the official Chinese numbers, rely on the information we can trust, and focus on what’s most important: containing and eradicating the deadly global pandemic.

Cover-ups, apathy, and inertia

Over the past two decades, Human Rights Watch has extensively documented the Chinese government’s censorship and falsification of information during public health crises. A government worker in southern China told me that she had little confidence in the accuracy of the non-contact digital thermometers she and her colleagues were instructed to use to check local residents’ temperature at checkpoints. “We don’t think they actually work. It was just for show, in case the [national authorities] come to inspect,” she said.

In the 2000s, numerous mass lead poisoning incidents were reported as China was quickly becoming known as “the world’s factory.” In a 2011 report, Human Rights Watch documented that government officials in provinces with high rates of industrial pollution restricted access to lead testing, deliberately withheld or falsified test results, and denied children treatment. Family members and journalists seeking information about the problem were intimidated and harassed.

During the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, authorities initially underreported infection rates and falsely proclaimed that the “atypical pneumonia” had “already been brought under effective control.” The cover-up contributed significantly to the spread of the disease. Contrary to current WHO praise for the Chinese government’s Covid-19 response, WHO officials at the time repeatedly expressed concern about underreporting and the lack of transparency.

In a 2005 report, Human Rights Watch detailed Chinese authorities’ harassment of AIDS activists and suppression of information that showed that China’s AIDS epidemic was largely caused by government-sponsored unsanitary blood-for-money programs.  In 2004, authorities in Henan, the province hardest hit at the time, said there were 25,036 carriers of HIV in the province, but local doctors and activists, based on their field research in affected villages, estimated that at least one million people had contracted HIV as a result of blood-selling schemes.

In the summer of 2008, for more than a month the Chinese government prohibited the domestic media from reporting on infants being poisoned by toxin-laced milk powder formula—which resulted in at least six deaths and sickened approximately 300,000 children. Ultimately, economic concerns prompted Chinese authorities to let up on media restrictions. Zhao Lianhai, the father of a poisoned-milk victim, was later sentenced to a two-and-a-half-year prison term for exposing the government’s failure to assist child victims.

In 2018, authorities across the country harassed, detained, and persecuted journalists, activists, lawyers, and families of victims for exposing China’s persistent faulty vaccine problems. News articles and social media posts that criticized the government’s failure to regulate the vaccine market properly were routinely censored.

The value of good information

To be sure, ensuring accurate information on the number of people infected with Covid-19 and the number of deaths is not easy, and some governments are admitting this is a challenge that makes containing the global pandemic all the more difficult. But in China, investigations by scientists, journalists, and citizens continue to be suppressed, just as they have been for decades.

The apathy and inertia pervasive within China’s vast bureaucracy hampers both accurate reporting and adequate detection of Covid-19 cases. The country’s history of cover-ups should have served as a warning to anyone reading the news that official Chinese information about the virus simply isn’t reliable.

As the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. No one should be fooled by information put out by the Chinese government the next time around.

Bot or not? #AI looks at #Twitter behavior to sort real accounts from fake – SPONSOR: Datametrex AI Limited $DM.ca

Bot or not? A.I. looks at Twitter behavior to sort real accounts from fake

For the past several years, there’s been heightened concern about the impact of so-called bots on platforms like Twitter. A bot in this context is a fake account synonymous with helping to spread fake news or misinformation online. But how exactly do you tell the difference between an actual human user and a bot? While clues such as the use of the basic default “egg” avatar, a username consisting of long strings of numbers, and a penchant for tweeting about certain topics might provide a few pointers, that’s hardly conclusive evidence.

That’s the challenge a recent project from a pair of researchers at the University of Southern California and University of London set out to solve. They have created an A.I. that’s designed to sort fake Twitter accounts from the real deal, based on their patterns of online behavior.

“Detecting bots can be very challenging as they continuously evolve and become more sophisticated,” Emilio Ferrara, research assistant professor in the USC Department of Computer Science, told Digital Trends. “Existing tools that work well with older and simpler types of bots are not as accurate to predict more complex ones. So it’s always exciting to identify new, previously unknown characteristics of the behavior of human users that are not yet exhibited by bots. This could [be used to help] improve the accuracy of detection tools.”

The researchers leveraged various datasets of hand-labeled examples of both fake and real Twitter account messages, produced by other researchers in the community. In total, they trained their system on 8.4 million tweets from 3,500 human accounts and an additional 3.4 million tweets from 5,000 bots. This helped them to uncover a variety of insights into tweeting patterns. For instance, human users are up to five times more likely to reply to messages. They also get increasingly interactive with other users over the course of a long Twitter session, while the length of an average tweet decreases during this same time frame. Bots, on the other hand, show no such changes.

But don’t expect this work to be the definitive lasting word in this field. Just like the cat-and-mouse game between software companies and hackers, whereby one group tries to close vulnerabilities and the other works to find new ones, the field of bot discovery will continue to develop.

“These findings will inform future bot detection tools,” Ferrara said. “However, we expect that bot-making tools will see these findings as well, so it will be interesting to see when — or how soon — some of the open-source bot-making tools that are available online will adjust to reflect the human behavioral trends that we discovered.”

A paper describing the work was recently published in the journal Frontiers in Physics.

How to spot “fake news” and misinformation in the era of #COVID19 – SPONSOR: Datametrex AI Limited $DM.ca

How to spot “fake news” and misinformation in the era of COVID-19

  • COVID-19’s arrival in Canada has brought many side-effects, including growing concerns about misinformation and deliberately dishonest media dubbed “fake news”.
  • Although automatic-detection systems have been tested, the rise of misinformation appears to be inherently linked to social media.

By: Justin Madu

However, less-than-factual sources generally share a few warning signs.

One of the biggest red flags that something isn’t right is a headline that makes bold or outlandish claims:

“If it seems like clickbait, don’t click on it because chances are it is not going to be legitimate or scientifically-proven information. If it is a sensational blurb, that is probably a good sign not to click on the article and believe everything inside,” explained Wendy Gray, Vista Radio’s National News Director.

Some copycats might even mimic trusted news sources.

“Some stories look like they’re coming from legitimate media outlets but there will be slight alterations to the URL,” said Gray

Similarly, misinformation may be spread through untrustworthy websites claiming to be news outlets. If you’re not familiar with a website, extra skepticism may be required.

Gray added the social climate of a global pandemic can lead to the spread of less-than-scientific data.

Looking at an article’s sources remains important, as medical doctors and public health officials remain the best source for reliable information.

The public should be cautious as many people earn doctorates, alongside the title of “Dr.”, without any medical training.

“You always go with what the medical experts are saying,” Gray stated, adding “politicians are not medical scientists,” in response to headline-grabbing claims made by political figures around the world.

Familiar, reputable news outlets and credible expert-verified sources still remain the best places to find reliable facts.

“If you need information, obviously check your public health website first, but if you’re looking for general information about what’s going on I wouldn’t hesitate to go to your local media sources… Honest, fact-based news is more important than ever,” she concluded.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control offers valuable COVID-19 information, as does the Provincial Government’s website.
