Apple plans augmented reality content to boost TV+ video service

  • Apple Inc. is planning to add augmented reality content to its Apple TV+ streaming video service, seeking new ways to attract and retain subscribers and drive interest in AR technology
  • In the new feature, elements of a TV show, like characters or objects, would be displayed on a viewer’s phone or tablet and integrated into the surrounding environment

By: Mark Gurman, Bloomberg News

For example, someone watching a moon-walking scene in the Apple show “For All Mankind” might be able to see a virtual lunar rover on their device’s display, seemingly perched atop their living room coffee table. The option would serve as bonus content akin to the director commentary or trailer that accompany a movie download and would be accessed from Apple’s TV app on the iPhone or iPad.

The AR feature is expected to debut next year, ahead of an Apple headset in 2022 that will be built around augmented and virtual reality, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to discuss the plan publicly. A release of the TV+ feature had previously been set for later this year, but the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on software development and film production impeded that goal. Apple could ultimately decide to scrap the plan, the people said. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Bonus content has been one of several ways that Apple has been seeking to make TV+ more valuable and keep people subscribed. Apple is preparing to introduce podcasts related to existing TV+ shows, Bloomberg has reported. The company is also developing a series of subscription bundles dubbed Apple One, which would include TV+ along with discounted access to other services like Apple Music and Apple Arcade mobile games. Last week, Apple debuted the first TV+ video bundle, offering customers who subscribe to the Apple service a discounted rate on a package of CBS All Access and Showtime.

The Cupertino, California-based company launched TV+ last year for $4.99 a month, but many customers are still on a free year of service that comes with the purchase of an Apple product. The first trial accounts will expire just weeks after the next iPhones are set to debut in October. The company is considering keeping a free access offer to lure new subscribers but with a reduced period of time, the people said.

While increasing subscription revenue is a key strategy for Apple now, AR is central to the company’s future devices. Some of the upcoming iPhones will include the Lidar 3-D scanners used in the latest iPad Pro, making AR apps quicker to load and giving them a better sense of their environment, people familiar with the products have said.

For 2022, Apple is preparing to launch a headset that mixes augmented and virtual reality with a focus on gaming, video consumption and virtual meetings, Bloomberg has reported. An AR-only pair of glasses is planned for as early as 2023. The AR feature for TV+ would give Apple more content to show off on the future products when they debut. Currently, Apple’s only consumer AR features on the iPhone are the Measure app and Animojis. The company otherwise relies on third-party developers to provide AR tools.

Apple is well known for picking up smaller startups on the hush-hush to augment its business, and today news leaked out about the latest of these… nearly two years after the fact. Sometime between 2018 and 2019, the iPhone giant reportedly acquired and shut down Camerai, an augmented reality and computer vision company based out of Israel, which used to be called Tipit.

The news was first reported earlier today by Israeli newspaper Calcalist, and we have reached out to ask Apple directly about it. In the meantime, Jonathan (Yehonatan) Rimon, who had been Camerai’s CEO and co-founded the company with Moty Kosharovsky, Erez Tal and Aaron Wetzler, declined to comment one way or the other on the report when we contacted him directly about it. A separate source confirmed the story to us. We’ll update as we learn more.

Calcalist said that the startup sold for several tens of millions of dollars. From being founded in 2015, Camerai had raised around $5 million — including a $2.5 million round in 2017 and another unreported $2.5 million in 2018 — with investors including the Atooro Fund and another called the SKO Fund.

It seems that the acquisition came on the heels of multiple approaches from a number of companies at a time when AR was arguably at a peak of hype and many big tech companies wanted a piece of the action. (Recall that 2018 was the year when Magic Leap raised nearly $1 billion in a single round of funding.) Back in 2018, we heard rumors that those approaching and looking at the startup included Apple, Samsung and Alibaba.

The Calcalist report said that Camerai employees joined Apple’s computer vision team, and that the company’s technology has been incorporated into Apple products already. It’s not clear specifically where and when, but recall that both iOS 13 and iOS 14 have featured big software updates to the camera.

Camerai had built an SDK and specifically a range of software-based AR tools to help edit and use camera-made images in more sophisticated ways,

Its tech included the ability to detect different objects in the picture, and outline them with precision to alter them cosmetically; the ability to outline and apply filters across the whole image; a “skeleton tracking” neural network API that could detect and draw body joints in real time overlaid on a picture of a human; and its own version of selective focus for enhanced portrait modes (remember this was 2018 and this was not standard on phones at the time). Camerai’s site is shut down, but here are some screenshots of how it all looked, pulled from the Internet Archive:

Camerai’s acquisition underscores a couple of interesting, and ongoing, trends.

The first of these is in the development of smartphone technology, particularly around cameras. Some of the more interesting innovations in smartphone camera technology have come not out of improvements in hardware, but software, where the application of breakthroughs in artificial intelligence can mean that an existing combination of sensor, lens and on-phone and cloud processors produce a better and more technically dynamic picture than before.

At a time when smartphone replacement cycles have really slowed down and we are seeing also slower innovation on hardware, bolting on talent and tech created outside the phone companies is one way to gain a competitive edge.

(Separately, I wonder if making cutting-edge technology software-based also means that there could be scope in the future for paid updates to older phone models, which could mean more incremental revenues from consumers that don’t want to invest incompletely new devices.)

The second trend that this deal underscores is how Israel remains fertile ground for bigger companies on the hunt to pick up and bolt on technology, and that the secretive approach is likely to remain for some time to come.

“In Israel there are over 350 global corporate companies, from 30 countries, who search for local innovation. Some of them like Apple, MS, Google, even have local R&D [operations],” said Avihai Michaeli, a Tel Aviv-based senior investment banker and startup advisor. “Those global companies look mainly for tech which could serve as its competitive edge. It is not the first time that an acquired startup is asked not to publish it was acquired, nor talk about it.”

Other acquisitions that Apple has made in Israel have included camera module maker LinX, semiconductor startup Anobit and 3D sensor company PrimeSense.

We’ll update this post as we learn more.

Future Chelsea stars use augmented reality app to supplement training

Chelsea’s stars of tomorrow are already honing their skills by using the Blues’ groundbreaking new augmented reality mobile phone app.

The Stamford Bridge club’s junior academy players are using the Perfect Play app to supplement their training.

Academy graduate Reece James has provided the first digital masterclass for the tool that is now available for anyone to download.

24 hours have passed since the official launch of Perfect Play and we’re so overwhelmed by the support and amazing comments! There’s so much more to come from Perfect Play! Download today and #TrainWithTheBest

— Perfect Play (@PerfectPlay) August 13, 2020

The new app uses video tracking technology to map the user’s space and return inch-perfect data on performance and ability in a host of individual or team challenges.

Chelsea’s academy staff and developers have worked since December 2018 on a product launched this week, one which they believe can take youth training to a whole new digital level.

Chelsea Under-11s head coach Sam Page has helped stars like Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham through the Stamford Bridge ranks and has taken a lead role on the new app.

“We’ve actually already used the app with our academy players and it’s been a really interesting part of our home learning programmes that we developed during the course of the pandemic lockdown,” Page told the PA news agency.

“It presented a really exciting opportunity for us with Perfect Play, and we offered the testing version of the app to our academy players from the Under-Nines to Under-13s as part of their home learning programme.

“They tested it for us and had it as part of their programme, so we had some really nice feedback and were able to make some refinements off the back of that.

“And moving forward we’re really keen for it to be a supplementary part of the programme for the youngest age groups that we only see on a part-time basis.

“Our goal is to remain at the forefront of what’s happening in global academy football, we always aspire to be world-leading.

It’s been fantastic working on this project for the past 18months. I am now really excited to see where we go next. https://t.co/o0h7pswPpy

— Sam Page (@sampage1871) August 12, 2020

“Our head of youth development Neil Bath really drives us as coaches to think in a fully-integrated fashion, and about all the technologies that come with that.

“Perfect Play is a really good example of how as coaches we can think about what technology can do to enhance our coaching practice.”

Manager Frank Lampard awarded a record number of senior debuts to home-grown stars in his first season at the Stamford Bridge helm.

Page admitted his own pride at seeing such a bumper crop of academy graduates, especially when witnessing England midfielder Mount hit the net in the 1-1 home draw with Leicester at the start of the campaign.

“There is immense pride in seeing a lot of our lads playing at Stamford Bridge,” said Page.

“For me the memory of Mason scoring against Leicester in the first game, I’ve been to many games at Stamford Bridge but that’s a very special memory for me.

“We talk to our players about it now, about the pathway and the expectations that Frank has, and the things he talks to us as academy staff about; the commitment, hard work, dedication, all of those core fundamental skills that we’ve also tried to embed in the Perfect Play app.” Stars like Mason Mount, pictured, were helped through Chelsea’s academy by Sam Page, one of the key contributors to the club’s new training app (Alastair Grant/NMC Pool)

Product owner Steve Didd will continue to work with Chelsea on refining an app he believes can help radically alter general sports training.

“Technology is going to be hugely influential in terms of how people train, and it’s something we’re hugely excited about delivering within Perfect Play,” Didd told the PA news agency.

“Our goal with the product is to make kids better footballers, and this technology enables us to show them they are getting better, because it captures their performances.

“Kids are very tech savvy now, but this should be extremely intuitive to set up and use and we believe it’s going to become an essential part of football training moving forwards.

“We’re taking elite academy methodologies that have been developed over decades, digitising that, and allowing kids to have that same kind of training, that wouldn’t be accessible elsewhere. So it’s there to help kids improve and gain the edge.

“We already have a masterclass in the app with Reece James.

“We’re heavily involved with the first-team men and women as well as the academy kids who feature. And we’ll be doing more masterclasses with players from both the men’s and women’s team.”

If you were a small cap Augmented Reality company from Vancouver that needed to appoint an old media / new media powerhouse to head up your European sales operations, we really don’t think you could have found someone better credentialed than Michael Anderson – and that’s exactly what ImagineAR (IP:CSE) (IPNFF:OTCQB) did.

Anderson is a highly regarded leader in the world of digital with his roots firmly based in UK media. Part entrepreneur, part corporate animal, he quickly rose through the ranks ending up as Managing Director of News UK. He worked for Rupert Murdoch and Les Hinton during his rise to the top and made the Board room of both News UK and Associated Newspapers (publishers of the Daily Mail).

Sensing the changing winds of the media business, Anderson was a driving force on the launch team of Metro, which overtook The Sun in 2018 as the largest circulation of any newspaper in the UK.  At Metro, he was instrumental in the paper being cited as a new business case with commercial results not seen previously in the newspaper industry, growing revenue from £100k a week to £1m per week in just 12 months.  Additionally, Mike was the founder of the Chelsea APPS Factory which included UK clients KPMG, Ladbrokes, Standard Life, TfL, Vanquis and Waitrose.

….. And now he is sensing another change in the winds to put his considerable talents and team behind the Augmented Reality solutions of ImagineAR.

If you don’t know what Augmented Reality (AR) is, this quote from Apple CEO Tim Cook is all the motivation you need to get up to speed:

“AR Will play an important role in how we use technology in the future – and promises to be as influential in our society as the smart phone”

Anderson wholeheartedly agrees, stating “ImagineAR is the most advanced AR platform in the market today and I am excited to launch the company’s sales and marketing initiatives in the UK and Europe.”

That quote is just the tip of the iceberg.  Watch what Anderson has to say about the “unlimited possibilities of Augmented Reality” and some pretty good hints about whose doors he will be knocking on first …. which is pretty impressive given the fact August is vacation season in Europe 🙂

If our interview with CEO Alen Paul Silverrstieen and Michael Anderson is any indication, it sounds like the Company’s growth into the UK and Europe is all but assured in 2020 and well beyond.

VANCOUVER, BC and ERIE Pa., July 31, 2020 – ImagineAR Inc. Today’s announcement and new total receipts from warrant exercises was preceded by announcements on July 8th, in which the Company announced the receipt of approximately $1,500,000 from the exercise of warrants, followed by an announcement on July 20th of an additional $2,000,000 for a new total of approximately $3,500,000.

FINANCIAL RESOURCES ALLOW IMAGINEAR TO PURSUE ALL AUGMENTED REALITY OPPORTUNITIES

The proceeds from this latest round of warrant exercises is expected to provide ImagineAR with the financial resources necessary to fund growth and operations for a minimum of 30 months, assuming the Company wasn’t able to generate any further revenue from business operations.

However, as the Company expects to generate meaningful revenue from its current and anticipated sales pipeline over the next 12 months, as well as, receive additional proceeds from further anticipated warrant exercises, the Company is confident it now has the war chest necessary to pursue all anticipated business opportunities as the demand for its Augmented Reality solutions continues to grow on a weekly basis.

AGORACOM provides verification of ImagineAR management, as well as, smart rules of engagement to insure civilized, constructive and robust conversation between all of our stakeholders.  It will become an invaluable tool given our anticipated developments in 2020 and I look forward to posting our first Q&A later today.”

“I believe AR could be bigger than the web,” said Scott Belsky, chief product officer of Adobe Creative Cloud. “But we have to unlock artists’ full potential in this new medium. And we need rules and standards for where, when, and how AR appears. It can be a lifesaver, but it can also be dangerously distracting. We’ll find the boundaries through responsible exploration.”

This bridges the physical and digital worlds, opening up a new realm for creators and marketers to explore and experiment. Add to that the ongoing proliferation of voice interfaces, and it is clear to see that consumers are demanding more experiences that provide information in clever ways and stir emotions. Voice and immersive media can seamlessly permeate the environment around us and fulfill that demand with fresh, personal, and meaningful experiences.

“We think AR, combined with AI, can be a killer combination of experiences unlike anything we’ve seen before,” said Abhay Parasnis, EVP and CTO at Adobe.

AR promises retail environments where people can interact digitally with physical objects. For example, companies are already experimenting with using AR to give consumers X-ray vision to see internal construction or details of products, such as size and colors available in stock. AR also promises to impact the future of work, with more remote meetings in which on-site staff can collaborate creatively with virtual colleagues, as if they were working in the same room.

However, to realize the full promise of AR, the tools that let artists express their creative vision must evolve as well. Spatial design requires moving beyond current physical and digital tools to a multisensory approach that uses natural inputs, like voice, sight, touch, and gestures. As the means become more intuitive, the mechanics will fade into the background. Then, artists, designers — everyone — can explore the new dimension and craft experiences that know no limits.

Enabling AR With AI
For designers, the mental shift from 2D to 3D — and spatial design — requires new tools and skills to work and thrive in a different dimension. AI is enabling the shift to more realistic and engaging experiences and more powerful personalization.

Creating AR experiences that look and feel convincing calls for rendering, lighting, materials, and objects that behave according to real-world rules. Using AI and machine learning, 3D design tools can handle time-consuming tasks and create photorealistic results that previously required costly photo shoots or hours of creative work.

“AI is enabling creators to develop immersive experiences much faster and with greater fidelity than ever before, and promises to empower individuals to interact with those experiences in real time,” said Tatiana Mejia, product marketing and strategy at Adobe.

Indeed, AI provides invaluable capabilities beyond accelerating content creation. For example, personalizing experiences and providing contextually relevant information in real time requires prodigious processing power. Learning from users’ reactions and predicting what they’ll want next demands instantaneous decision-making. This is where AI shines. AI can help designers use data on customer preferences to show products in 3D instantly, with favorite logos, colors, and sizes.

On the flip side, AI and machine learning can help experience businesses learn from every customer interaction so they continually become better at delivering the right offer. And using computer vision and neural networks, AR can lower barriers to online purchases, letting customers virtually try on clothes and experiment with make-up colors.

AI-powered tools for spatial design will make it easier to bring stories to life around us. Creatives working on the forefront of AR are already offering a hint of the limitless possibilities.

Bridging The Physical And Digital Worlds
“We’re used to art that lives in the physical world,” said Stefano Corazza, head of augmented reality at Adobe. “And we’re familiar with interactive experiences that live on a screen. AR is bridging these two worlds. It’s providing new flexibility and fluidity to the physical world.”

With AI-powered AR, object recognition and tracking, gestural input, eye tracking, and voice commands can combine to let users engage with 2D and 3D objects in virtual space with hands, eyes, and words. Visual artists gain a new medium for expression, brands and consumers gain a new way to interact, and colleagues gain a new way to communicate.

While many of the applications of AR have yet to be discovered, below we look at four ways artists, designers, and brands are using AR to make experiences more expressive, informative, interactive, and collaborative.

Example 1: Animation Anywhere
AR can transform everyday experiences into the extraordinary. And for some, AR provides a new way to express feelings that can’t be captured in any other way.

Artists Zach Lieberman and Molmol Kuo incorporated multisensory design capabilities in the iOS AR app Weird Type, which lets users write and animate anything, anywhere, in 3D space. That led to people using the app to tell a story about location, build sculptures, and describe sensations difficult to put into words, like the feeling of the wind.

With AR, companies can connect to customers through all of their senses. Combining 2D and 3D in AR can also help sell a vision, such as a new product design, to stakeholders and clients. Designers and developers can work together to build engaging experiences that marketers distribute via a brand’s app. And in addition to retail, AR offers endless opportunities in other realms, including medical training, tourism, advertising, and entertainment.

Example 2: Augmented Retail Experiences
A demonstration at the 2019 Adobe EMEA Summit, as reported by CNBC, showed how customers in a Foot Locker store could rotate and “explode” an AR shoe to learn about its construction, see a model in various colors, virtually discard rejected options, and check the stock for shoes in the appropriate size. All the information a customer could want appears as if by magic with the power of AI — and without ever asking a clerk for help.

Example 3: Immersive Art
A recent San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibit featured interactive artwork inspired by René Magritte. As reported by NVIDIA, visitors could insert themselves in paintings via an AR experience, mixing their images with the art. The relationship between creator and audience transforms, as AR allows consumers to “add” to a design. Interacting with Magritte’s work created a strong connection between visitors and the art, deepening their appreciation of it.

Example 4: Close Collaboration From Afar
Spatial computing lets colleagues collaborate from anywhere in AR, making them more productive and creative — and helping everyone feel more connected. Users can share their reality with transported 3D copies of colleagues, point at objects of interest, and write on virtual post-it notes they can even stick on the wall.

“AR challenges us to design for human perception, not pixels, when we integrate sight, speech, movement, haptics, and context,” said Silka Miesnieks, head of emerging design at Adobe.

Overcoming The Boundaries
In the era of AR and AI, artists and designers, marketers and developers — and eventually everyone — will make the shift to the multidimensional, multisensory, immersive world. We must rethink design principles, the creator’s role, and reimagine experiences to center on what humans, not devices, can do and with deep understanding of what moves them.

As immersive technologies transform creativity, creative tools should set designers free to work and play in new worlds and to think in disruptive new ways, no longer constrained by the boundaries of the past. AI can help speed creation and personalize the experiences. But for mass adoption, creative tools must become more intuitive and contextually appropriate.

With further advances in machine learning, the tools professionals already know will become more intuitive, assisting humans to explore spatial design with more integrated, seamless workflows. Voice recognition using natural language commands can simplify user interfaces and streamline processes.

Spatial computing promises solutions to previously unsolved problems, such as better city planning to address climate change, medical breakthroughs, and education that caters to a greater diversity of abilities using our sense of spatial memory through AR. It will challenge designers to create more immersive experiences while being transparent about how experiences are created, enhanced, and delivered.
