Move to #EVs to be ‘dramatic’ for metals: Penny #PGM #Nickel $TN.ca $NAM.ca

NEW YORK — Norilsk Nickel chairman Gareth Penny gave his predictions for electric and hybrid vehicle growth and how the company will move to maximize the value of its products in an interview with Andrea Hotter in the April 2018 issue of Metal Market Magazine.

Penny predicts a dramatic shift in commodity demand patterns as the electrification of the global economy continues to boost demand for the metals that Norilsk produces, particularly nickel and cobalt.

“Like most of these things, the move to [electric vehicles] will take longer than people think, but when the time arrives it’ll be even more dramatic,” he said.

Penny noted that hybrid battery vehicles in the United States currently account for 9% of the market, with annual growth of 18%; battery EVs have around 3% market share but growth of 25%. Fuel cell EVs represent just 1% of the market but are growing at an annual pace of 41%.

Although Norilsk is synonymous with nickel production, roughly 27% of the company’s revenue actually comes from the metal compared with 30% from palladium. With around 8% of Norilsk’s revenue coming from platinum, more than one-third of its earnings come from platinum group metals.

Penny remains unperturbed about the potential loss of demand for palladium  – his top commodity pick currently despite his self-confessed love for diamonds – due to the elimination of catalytic converters as the world electrifies its cars. This is largely because he expects the biggest absolute growth in the next 10 years to be in hybrid vehicles.

“You cannot make a diesel engine a hybrid as you need a very light engine, which is by definition a petrol engine. Palladium is the catalytic converter of choice for petrol engines, while platinum is for diesel,” he said. “We are confident that in the next 10 years, demand for palladium in hybrid vehicles is going to grow very rapidly and probably outstrip the absolute growth of battery and fuel cell EVs.”

Norilsk might even get involved in new areas of the battery production chain, Penny said, with a joint venture its likely method of entry.

“Norilsk will definitely look at some form of partnership at different levels in the industry in order to maximize the value of its product. That’s something we’re actively considering at the moment,” he said. “I don’t know about developing batteries, but we’re looking very carefully at working with European chemical company BASF, with whom we’ve had relationships before.”

The amount of solar power capacity expected to be added in the coming years is equivalent to 70,000 new solar panels every hour – enough to cover 1,000 soccer pitches every day.

It is estimated that global solar power capacity will triple by 2022, driven by Chinese demand and the ever-falling cost of buying and installing solar panels.

According to the International Energy Association (IEA), photovoltaic solar power grew faster than any fuel in 2016, and there will be far more solar capacity added in the next four years than any other type of renewable energy, including wind and hydropower.

China is expected to add 40% of the world’s new solar panels between now and 2022, despite having already surpassed its solar power target for 2020.

Concerns about air quality and the fact that China is responsible for manufacturing nearly two-thirds of the world’s solar panels are expected to drive the country to reach a solar capacity of 320 gigawatts (GW) by 2022 – more than the total electricity capacity of Japan.

Alongside China’s solar expansion, the IEA expects possible policy and regulatory improvements in other key countries, such as India, Japan and the US, will cause world solar PV cumulative capacity to triple to 880 GW by 2022.

By this time renewable energy capacity overall should increase by 43% – equivalent to half the global capacity in coal power, which has taken 80 years to build.

$AAO.ca FOX-TEK’s Electric Field Mapping (EFM) technology monitors pipe walls for internal corrosion

It’s highly accurate, it’s non-intrusive, it’s continuous and it goes with the flow.

Electrically speaking, that is.

For the past decade, Electric Field Mapping (EFM) technology—developed by Toronto-based FOX-TEK Canada Inc.—has been helping to keep Enbridge’s pipeline network healthy and fit for purpose by staying “current,” in a manner of speaking.

“If you put your finger in a stream, the water goes around your fingers. And that’s essentially how our EFM technology works,” says Allen Lone, President and CEO at FOX-TEK Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Augusta Industries Inc.

“Based on a continuous EFM monitoring system, we’re measuring the minute changes in electrical current density through a segment of the pipe where our sensor array is mounted,” adds Lone. “If there are any localized changes in the pipe wall—such as metal loss due to corrosion—our EFM system will detect a change in the current density.”

FOX-TEK’s EFM technology, as well as the company’s fiber optic-based optical strain gauges and sensor cable-based leak detection systems, are used all over the world—on anything from tanks and vessels to overpasses and bridges to refineries and electrical towers.

For energy pipelines in particular, EFM is a complementary technology that can be used to supplement a pipeline operator’s inspection and maintenance tactics.

Where a high-tech in-line inspection (ILI) tool has detected a localized area of minor internal corrosion that warrants monitoring, FOX-TEK will install an array of up to 200 wired metal pins, reflecting the size and the shape of the affected area, to monitor changes in the pipe wall’s electrical field.

Significantly, EFM systems are:

  • Built for remote applications, with each pin sensor array fully autonomous through solar-powered battery packs;
  • Continuous, as opposed to monitoring systems that must be manually checked;
  • Non-intrusive, allowing operators to monitor the effectiveness of their pipe cleaning regimens; and
  • Accessible, with wireless data transmission and cloud-based data storage that’s available 24/7 via web-based portals.

Enbridge is continuously looking for opportunities to employ existing technologies, and advance new ones, in the areas of design, construction, operations and maintenance, to keep our pipelines safe.

“Crude oil transmission pipelines are typically at low risk of internal corrosion due to the cleanliness of the transported products, as well as their high flow rates,” says Trevor Place, a senior engineering specialist with Enbridge’s liquids pipelines division. “Nevertheless, over the very long term, there may be periods when accumulated sediment and water have caused corrosion. These locations are easily detected through our in-line inspection programs, and some of these may become suitable for supplemental monitoring using EFM technology.

“Because they’re real-time and continuous,” adds Place, “FOX-TEK monitoring systems are capable of a high level of precision—and they provide validation for our ongoing mitigation activities, like interior cleaning or chemical additives that minimize bacteria and prevent corrosion.”

FOX-TEK’s EFM technology is currently providing continuous monitoring at several locations along Enbridge’s 17,511-mile (28,181-km) North American crude oil and liquids network.

“Because the EFM system is monitoring the actual pipe wall, there really is no better representation of what’s happening inside the pipe,” says Place. “FOX-TEK has been a solid performer for Enbridge for years.”

Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors says it has started producing lithium-ion battery cells at its $5 billion factory in Nevada.

The company says it began making high-performance cells in December and production started overnight for cells used in Powerwall energy-storage products.

Tesla plans to start making batteries for its Model 3 sedans later this year.

The massive Gigafactory outside Sparks is coming online in phases, with a goal of full operation in 2018.

Officials say it could almost double the world’s production of lithium-ion batteries, making them more affordable as the company looks beyond the luxury niche market.

The electric carmaker says it has more than 850 full-time employees, plus more than 1700 construction workers.

Nevada has promised Tesla $1.3 billion in state tax incentives based on projections that it’ll employ 6500 people at full production.

  • Experts say that the amount of lithium being produced in North America will not be enough to meet the growing demand for EVs (electrical vehicles) but that some of problem might/might not be alleviated via recycling,

According to a report from the US EPA: “lithium-ion batteries “safe” for disposal in contrast to nickel-cadmium and lead-based battery products.”

Here is the reason recycling is not happening: the scrap value of lithium is 1/10 the of the value of lead, hence low to no economic gains from lithium battery recycling.

Another article by Waste Management World acknowledges that electrical vehicle-makers would like to re-use lithium from recycled batteries, but that: It does not make any economic sense to recycle the batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries contain a very small fraction of lithium carbonate as a percent of weight and are inexpensive compared to cobalt or nickel.

The average lithium cost associated with Li-ion battery production is less than 3% of the production cost.

Intrinsic value for the Li-ion recycling business currently comes from the valuable metals such as cobalt and nickel that are more highly priced than lithium.

Due to less demand for lithium and low prices, none of the lithium used in consumer batteries is completely recycled.

There is a growing North America shortage of lithium for EVs (electric vehicles): There are at least 20 or 25 direct-electrically powered and hybrids coming onto the market in the next 5 or 6 years. They will come from auto manufactures in the US, Europe, Japan, China and Korea.

Many in the industry are aware, talking about and working on the problem of providing the high high grade lithium. The investment opportunities abound.

About 70% of the world’s lithium deposits are concentrated in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. The US imports over 80% of the lithium it uses.

Japan and South Korea (LG is the world’s largest producer) have both marked record high numbers of lithium-ion battery exports in H-1 in Y 2016, as auto companies ramp up battery consumption to power new all-electric offerings,

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence said a month ago. Lithium-ion battery shipments from Japan topped 33,500 tonnes in 2-H, up 17% from 2-H of of 2015 and over 31% Y-Y.

August 31, 2016 / Vancouver, British Columbia- Nevada Energy Metals Inc. “the Company” (TSX-V: BFF; OTCQB: SSMLF; Frankfurt: A2AFBV) ) is pleased to announce encouraging results have been received from the latest sampling program at the Company’s 100% owned Big Smokey Valley (North) project. The geochemical sampling program was designed to test for lithium values in surface soils and/or playa evaporates. Samples were obtained on a grid pattern consisting of eleven east/west lines spaced 400 meters apart with stations every 200 meters along the lines. The grid covered an area of approximately 3,000 acres.

Of the 170 sample points analyzed 150 reported Lithium values greater than or equal to 100 ppm with the highest value being 146 ppm Lithium (the median value being 116 ppm); 20 samples points were in the 53 ppm to 99 ppm range.

The BSV Lithium Project consists of 160 placer claims, with an area of 3,200 acres/1,295 hectares, located in northern Big Smokey Valley, Nye County, Nevada, 12 miles east of the town of Austin and extends approximately 100 miles in a southwesterly direction to reach a southern terminus near Clayton Valley. The northern section, where the claims area is located contains three geothermal resources; the Darrough, the McLeod and the Spencer hot springs.

Gravity survey results indicate the depth of valley fill to be approximately 5,100 feet and that there is subsurface closure of the valley a short distance to the south of the claim block. August 29, 2016 / Nevada Energy Metals Inc. “the Company” (TSX-V: BFF; OTCQB: SSMLF; Frankfurt: A2AFBV) is pleased to announce that a surface sampling program designed to test for lithium values in playa evaporates has been initiated at the Company’s 100% owned Black Rock Desert Project. Geochemical sample points are being arranged on a grid pattern of 11 lines spaced 400 meters apart with stations every 200 meters along the lines. It is expected that 170 sample points will be measured. Results should be available in approximately 3 weeks.

The Black Rock Desert Lithium Project consists of 128 placer claims, (2,560 acres/ 1,036 hectares) located in southwest Black Rock Desert, Washoe County, Nevada. The nearest population center is the town of Gerlach, which lies 177 kilometers north of Reno.

The western arm of the Black Rock Desert covers an area of about 2,000 square kilometers and contains 5 of the 30 currently listed Known Geothermal Resource Areas in Nevada. The property covers an area of playa underlain by a moderately deep basin interpreted from gravity and seismic surveys indicating a maximum thickness of valley-fill deposits of about 1,200 m/ 3,600 ft. A high salt content prevents any significant vegetation from growing on the playa surface. Locally, the basin is being fed in part by boiling springs and siliceous sinter containing strongly anomalous Lithium values (up to 3.5 ppm) that flank the property on the west side. (U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Open-File Report 81-918.) While these lithium values are well below those of producing lithium bines, they do represent a significant source of metal available for evaporative concentration within the playa basin.

The company plans to carry out additional exploration programs this fall to determine the potential for an economic lithium brine deposit. Future exploration will consist of shallow auger sampling followed by a high resolution geophysical program to define potential drill targets.
