Thunder Bay, Ontario–(Newsfile Corp. – June 10, 2019) – ZEN Graphene Solutions Ltd. (TSXV: ZEN) (“ZEN” or the “Company“) is pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) with the University of British Columbia (UBC), Okanagan Campus, School of Engineering, where ZEN will contribute a minimum of $300,000 over three years in support of graphene research and application development. Under the MOU, UBC and ZEN will collaborate on graphene-focused research projects relevant to applications of interest to potential end-user partners.

The main initial objectives defined in the MOU are:

(a) To formalize a collaborative research program utilizing expertise and capabilities from both ZEN and UBC and, where applicable, utilizing additional support and resources from government agencies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Mitacs and the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP); and,

(b) To structure an initial three-year research program with a committed minimum contribution by ZEN of $100,000 per year in support of UBC-based research projects.

ZEN has already supplied samples of its graphene and graphene oxide to UBC where it has undergone preliminary testing in the following applications:

  1. In multiple battery technologies;
  2. As an additive in cement-based composites;
  3. As an additive to aluminum and aluminum alloys; and,
  4. As a diesel and jet fuel additive.

“UBC has become a strong partner for ZEN over the last year bringing top quality researchers from multiple fields and connecting us with potential industrial partners. We wish to recognize the excellent research contributions made to date by Prof. Lukas Bichler and his team, and we look forward to formalizing our relationship with this agreement,” commented Dr. Francis Dubé.

“The three-year project, slated to begin this summer, challenges UBC engineering researchers to develop the next generation of stronger and lighter composite materials. The partnership with ZEN Graphene will allow for a transformational approach to composite materials development utilizing the unique properties of the Albany Graphite product. This will result in new composite materials with performance characteristics long beyond the reach of engineers and scientists using traditional material processing techniques. Linking to R&D activities at UBC will in turn enable ZEN to develop the Albany Graphite Deposit and get its graphene product to market more rapidly with a clear focus on high-impact real-world applications,” commented Dr. Bichler, associate professor of engineering at UBC’s Okanagan campus and research supervisor.

  • Initial agreement to in-license certain intellectual properties from a Canadian University that when combined with ZEN’s Albany Graphite, produces low cost, environmentally friendly graphene

Thunder Bay, Ontario–(Newsfile Corp. – May 30, 2019) – ZEN Graphene Solutions Ltd. (TSXV: ZEN) (“ZEN” or the “Company“) is pleased to announce that it has signed an initial agreement to in-license certain intellectual properties from a Canadian University that when combined with ZEN’s Albany Graphite, produces low cost, environmentally friendly graphene. The production process rapidly exfoliates Albany Graphite into few layer graphene (FLG, 2-5 layers) with a conversion efficiency of over 90%. Previous work has demonstrated that the unique Albany Graphite was converted to graphene far more efficiently when compared to flake or metamorphic graphite. This advantage was confirmed by recent testing using this new process.

“The challenge in the emerging graphene industry has been to produce consistent FLG, available in industrial quantities at prices that permit industrial adoption,” commented Dr. Francis Dubé. “We believe that with this exciting new process applied to our unique Albany Graphite product, ZEN Graphene Solutions possesses all the components to solve this challenge within a single vertically integrated company.”

The company has collected 110 tonnes of graphite-mineralized material with an estimated average grade of 6% graphitic carbon during the 2019 bulk sample program (see March 22, 2019 news release). Once this material has been purified into approximatively 99.8% graphite, this exfoliation process and others, will be used to convert the Albany Graphite into graphene and graphene oxide. The Company has commenced searching for an industrial location that will house a pilot production centre, a research and development lab as well as office space. The graphene produced by the pilot production centre will be offered for sale as permitted by the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.

ZEN invites companies looking for bulk quantities of graphene as described earlier to contact Phil Chateigneau, Head of Sales at [email protected].

James Jordan, P.Eng., is the “Qualified Person” for the purposes of National Instrument 43-101 and has reviewed, prepared and supervised the preparation of the technical information contained in this news release.

  • Test work is being carried out as part of the Company’s market development strategy with the goal of utilizing the tailings as a partial cement replacement
  • Early results show promise and if successful would reduce tailings disposal costs and create a potential by-product revenue stream
  • Research tailings material was successfully tested as a partial cement replacement, using 10 and 20 percent of a cement mixture with ZEN’s tailings material.
  • After 28 days, the results showed the 10% replacement had a compressive strength rating of 46.1 MPa, less than a 2% difference from the control at 47 MPa.
  • The 20% replacement had a compressive strength rating of 37.9 MPa, about 20% difference with the control sample.
  • These highly encouraging initial and unoptimized results show significant promise for ZEN to push forward with further development work.
