PhytoPain Pharma Files Clinical Trial Application (CTA) for a Topical Product for the Treatment of Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathic Pain $GCI.ca

  • Announced that it has filed a Clinical Trial Application (CTA) with Health Canada for PhytoPain Topical Gel Relief (PPTGR), a locally administered therapeutic for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP)
  • Upon approval of the CTA, the Company plans to initiate a double-blind, randomized, cross-over, placebo-controlled clinical study with PPTGR in late 2016 and expects to report initial clinical data from the trial in late 2017

OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(June 15, 2016) – PhytoPain Pharma (PPP) Inc., a subsidiary of GrowPros Cannabis Ventures Inc. (“GrowPros” or the “Company” or “GCI“) (CSE:GCI), today announced that it has filed a Clinical Trial Application (CTA) with Health Canada for PhytoPain Topical Gel Relief (PPTGR), a locally administered therapeutic for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP). Upon approval of the CTA, the Company plans to initiate a double-blind, randomized, cross-over, placebo-controlled clinical study with PPTGR in late 2016 and expects to report initial clinical data from the trial in late 2017.

CINP is a common adverse effect of cancer therapy and a frequent reason why cancer patients stop their treatment early. For some patients, the severity of the symptoms can be reduced by lowering the dose of chemotherapy or temporarily stopping it. In other patients, the symptoms of CINP may last for months or years after the cancer therapy has stopped. CINP symptoms are managed using the same analgesics used to manage other types of neuropathic pain. Some of these analgesics also cause intolerable side effects in patients. The use of a topical counterirritant may help reduce the symptoms of CINP and avoid exposing some patients to oral neuropathic pain analgesics.

According to Dr. Guy Chamberland, the Company’s Chief Scientific Officer, “PPP is developing this topical product to provide cancer patients a safer, natural and more tolerable alternative in the management of CINP”. The development of the PPTGR product is in line with PPP’s strategy to bring an integrative medical approach for cancer patients suffering from pain. “The demonstration of the safety and efficacy of botanical drugs including cannabis for pain management is a critical step in the development of an evidence-based approach to integrative medical care. PPP intends on working with physicians to demonstrate that PPTGR can be safely used as an adjunct to inhalation and oral medical marijuana for the reduction of pain in cancer patients. Physicians need additional drugs that can help reduce the amount of narcotics required to manage pain while minimizing the risk of psycho active effects or tolerance to opioids, cannabis, and other narcotics commonly prescribed to patients. The intention is to develop PPTGR, and other botanical-based drugs, as adjuncts to the standard of care,” stated Dr. Chamberland.

PPTGR is a counterirritant topical gel that conforms to the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) monograph. However, the intended use of counterirritant products under the NNHPD monograph does not include the temporary relief of CINP. PPP is launching a clinical trial to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of PPTGR in cancer patients with CINP and work with medical oncologists to integrate the use of PPTGR in the management of CINP.

International research indicates that 60% of patients undergoing chemotherapy will suffer from varying degrees of CINP during their treatment. PPP believes it can demonstrate increased symptom alleviation using natural based agents and mixtures as opposed to the synthetic alternatives. “PPP was created to conduct cannabinoid and medicinal plant based research with the goal of developing over-the-counter products for consumers and prescription drug products for physicians that can be distributed through the existing pharmaceutical infrastructure. This submission is the first step in the growth of our vision,” commented CEO Ryan Brown.

CINP Market Size and comparison products

MARKET STATISTICS:

There were an estimated 15.2 million cancer cases globally in 2014 according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) with projections of 17.1 million cases in 2020. Roughly 25%-30% of cancer patients receive chemotherapy, and of those patients, 70%-80% experience a form of CINP. The global CINP market saw estimated revenue of $1.3 billion in 2014 with a projected 5.7% compounded annual growth rate through 2020 as cancer rates climb with growing, aged populations. Of the products available Oral delivery drug of dronabinol which is comprised of synthetic cannabinoids had sales of $110M in 2014. Similar to other mainly orally administered cannabinoids, results in relatively low bioavailability, coupled with irregular pharmacokinetics secondary to absorption variability and first-pass metabolism by the liver, complicated by the need for multiple dosages per day. In addition, many patients report nausea and/or vomiting as a side-effect related to the drug. (NEMUS BIO SCIENCE)

Many studies have concluded that natural cannabinoids offer a safer, more effective solution than their synthetic counterparts. A recent article entitled Comparison of Outcome Expectancies for Synthetic Cannabinoids and Botanical Marijuana, from The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, concluded that given growing public acceptance of recreational and medical marijuana, coupled with negative perceptions and increasing regulation of synthetic cannabinoid compounds, botanical marijuana is likely to remain more available and more popular than synthetic cannabinoids.

PPP is proud to position itself as a leader in the development of natural pharmaceuticals derived Cannabis and other medicinal plants,” commented CEO Ryan Brown.

Medical marijuana users get OK from province to vaporize anywhere

TORONTO — Medical marijuana users in Ontario are now legally able to use vaporizers just about anywhere in the province.

The Liberal government quietly exempted them this week from a law that bans the use of e-cigarettes anywhere regular cigarettes are prohibited. It means medical marijuana users can vaporize in restaurants, at work or on playgrounds.

Associate Health Minister Dipika Damerla said under the exemption for medical marijuana users, employers or restaurant owners could still ban them from smoking on the premises.

“If it’s bothering somebody, find another place to go and smoke,” she said Wednesday.

“Somebody who really needs it for medical reasons may need to be able to smoke it or vape it. On the other hand, we are very sensitive to people around them. It really is about balancing those rights.”

The exemption is about letting people who are very sick or in a lot of pain to take their prescribed medication when they need to, Damerla said.

Jonathan Zaid, the founder of Canadians for Fair Access to Medical Marijuana, said the new regulations don’t change much since medical marijuana users could already smoke “pretty much” anywhere before the e-cigarette law was passed in May.

“Public places like parks or sidewalks are for sure allowed now in the regulations,” he said.

“So it doesn’t really mean anything new because it has always been allowed. There haven’t been regulations pertaining to vaporizers in the past, but what it does mean is the provincial government is taking a step forward and actually recognizing medical marijuana as a legitimate medicine.”

But Zaid highly doubts the change in regulations will mean medical marijuana users flooding playgrounds and restaurants to vaporize.

“There’s one thing to have a right and there’s another thing to abuse it,” said Zaid, who uses medical marijuana to treat chronic headaches.

“Everyone that I know, including myself, who uses medical cannabis is discreet about it. They just want to use it as their medicine to feel better, to live a better quality of life and they don’t want to be harassed about it, so that also means they’re not typically likely to do it in a very public space.”

Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown said he didn’t want to “make a lot of political hay” over the exemption, but he urged the Liberal government to make sure the new provincial rules are in line with what municipalities have established.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath didn’t sound especially shocked by the exemption either.

When asked what she would do if someone was smoking marijuana next to her at a restaurant, she laughed and said, “I’ll probably eat more.”

Medical marijuana could be covered by insurance, experts say

Posted by AGORACOM-JC at 5:38 PM on Monday, July 27th, 2015

New rules allowing the sale of cannabis oil smooth way for more controlled prescription of drug

  • Canadians who have been prescribed medical marijuana could one day see their insurance company footing the bill, experts predict, following the introduction of new Health Canada rules that allow for the sale of cannabis oils.

By Alexandra Posadzki, The Canadian Press Posted: Jul 27, 2015 10:30 AM ET Last Updated: Jul 27, 2015 2:21 PM ET

Health Canada announced revamped medical marijuana regulations earlier this month after the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that users of the drug should be permitted to consume it in other forms, such as oils and edibles, rather than having to smoke dried buds.

“You’re going to see insurance companies slowly start to creep into the sector,” says Khurram Malik, an analyst at Jacob Securities Inc., noting that the new regulations will allow medical marijuana producers to sell gel caps similar to those made from cod liver oil.

That will allow for more precise dosing, Malik says.

“When you’re trying to smoke a plant you have no idea how much you’re consuming, so that makes doctors a little nervous,” he said.

Legitimizing the drug

Experts say the changes are a major step towards legitimizing the drug in the eyes of doctors and insurers.

“When something doesn’t look different than other medicines, it becomes much easier for people to get comfortable with the idea that this is, in fact, a possible treatment option for patients,” says Bruce Linton, the chief executive of Smiths Falls, Ont.-based Tweed Marijuana Inc.

However, medical marijuana producers still have one major hurdle to overcome before insurers begin routinely funding the drug — cannabis currently doesn’t have a drug identification number, known as a DIN.

“If it was issued a DIN by Health Canada, it’s quite likely that the insurance companies would cover it,” says Wendy Hope, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc.

“To obtain a DIN, the new form of medical marijuana would need to go through the full Health Canada approval process like any new drug.”

As it stands, most insurance companies don’t routinely cover medical marijuana. But some insurers, including Manulife, say they will consider making an exception if the employer has specifically requested it for one of its employees.

Up to the employer

“It’s up to the employer to ask if they want to have it covered,” says Hope.

Earlier this year, Sun Life agreed to pay for a University of Waterloo student’s medical marijuana prescription through his student health plan after the student union went to bat for him. Jonathan Zaid, 22, uses the drug to combat a syndrome called new daily persistent headache.

Some health insurance companies may pay for medical marijuana through a health spending account, says Hope. But, she adds, “my understanding is it doesn’t happen often.”

Malik says the primary reason why medical marijuana doesn’t have a DIN is a lack of rigorous, clinical research on its efficacy.

“The evidence is very circumstantial — not your typical 10-year, double-blind study that doctors and big pharmaceutical companies like to see,” Malik said.

He suspects that’s about to change.

Need for DIN numbers

“You’re going to see a lot of Canadian companies partnering up with universities overseas that are a little more progressive than the ones we have here, at least in this space, to drive this research forward and legitimize it in the eyes of doctors and get DIN numbers on these things,” Malik said.

Malik says there is a financial incentive for insurers to pay for medical marijuana, rather than shelling out for pricier chronic pain drugs such as opiates.

“From a dollars and cents standpoint, if marijuana is the same thing as a narcotic opiate, they would much rather cover marijuana because they’re in the business to make money,” Malik said.

Bioavailability Testing to Commence on Lexaria’s Patent-Pending Technology

Posted by AGORACOM-JC at 8:42 AM on Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

KELOWNA, BC / May 20, 2015 / Lexaria Corp. (OTCQB:LXRP) (CSE:LXX) (the “Company”) is pleased to announce it has engaged Absorption Systems LP in the USA, to begin third party in vitro tests using a human intestinal tissue model to evaluate the cannabidiol (CBD) permeability of its patent-pending technology that infuses cannabinoid compounds within lipids.

The study will assess CBD permeability achieved with our proprietary ViPova(TM) tea formulation at multiple sampling time points compared to positive and negative controls under strict experimental conditions. In vitro testing using human tissue models can be preferable to animal testing since human cells can be used directly to provide species-specific permeability results.

“Although we cannot know in advance the outcome of such tests, the results have the potential to materially affect future outcomes for the Company,” said John Docherty, president of Lexaria. “We have a wealth of anecdotal evidence from our growing ViPova(TM) customer base extolling the marked effects of our CBD-infused tea and we look forward to the outcome of this study to help quantify this in detail.”

It is generally accepted in pharmacological sectors that the bioavailability of any active ingredient is one of the most important factors determining its effects on the body. Enhanced bioavailability can be extremely useful and is highly valued for any useful molecule, including CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Lexaria expects to begin this testing in the near future and will report results when they are available in due course, expected within the next 3-4 months.
