Pontax-Lithium property …

Stria holds 100 per cent ownership of the Pontax-Lithium property located in the west-central James Bay territory in northern Quebec.

The property, which Stria acquired from Khalkos Exploration Inc. in 2013, is host to a recently discovered swarm of a dozen spodumene-bearing (a lithium mineral) pegmatite dikes, each one metre to 10 metres in thickness, plus a series of small centimetre-thick dikelets.

The lithium-bearing dikes outcrop over an area of 450 metres by 100 metres (for more information, click here to view the NI-43-101 Technical Report (Girard,2013) on the Pontax-Lithium Property).

Willcox Lithium / Arizona

Stria holds 100 per cent ownership of the Willcox Lithium project, located in Cochise County, Arizona. Acquired through the purchase of Pueblo Lithium LLC from AGR-O Phosphate Inc. in 2014, the property is comprised of 61 lode mining claims.

Willcox Playa is located a few kilometres south of the city of Willcox in north-central Cochise County, 120 km east of Tucson. This barren flat — elevation 1,260 metres (approx. 4,136 feet) — is the lowest part of Willcox basin, which is the northern end of Sulphur Springs Valley. The location is known for its lithium content, and Willcox Playa was part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s 1978 drill program testing lithium distributions in the late Cenozoic sedimentary basin.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(May 20, 2014) – Stria Lithium Inc., (TSX VENTURE:SRA) (“Stria” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its Phase 1 “proof of principle” development of a novel hard rock ore-to-lithium chloride process.

Stria owns the Pontax spodumene and Willcox brine lithium properties in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec and southeastern Arizona, respectively.

On January 14, 2014, Stria announced its plans to introduce proprietary, on-site processing technologies that produce high purity lithium chloride directly from spodumene ore on an environmentally sustainable basis.

The potential benefits of the technologies is that they require less controls; less chemistry via the recycling of chemicals; require less energy due to energy recycling; reduce capital costs from the construction of smaller, compact processing facilities, and; the combination of a simple process and compact design enable easy automation.

“Stria is a technology lithium property developer with an eye to building a competitive advantage in an established global market by focusing on the introduction of cost-mitigating, upstream, environmentally sustainable processing capabilities,” said Stria President and Chief Operating Officer Julien Davy.

“With the proof of principle phase completed, we have commenced our Phase 2 optimization of kinetics and recovery testing of our spodumene ore-to-lithium chloride process,” Mr. Davy said.

“The engineering data derived from Phase 2 examinations and laboratory trials should form the bases for construction of a small scale pilot plant,” Mr. Davy added.

Stria has embarked on a strategic, technology-oriented business path to develop a proprietary, upstream processing technology for the Pontax resource, and; to further refine an existing, proven brine processing technology for the Willcox project.

With Phase 1 mineralogical and metallurgical testing program now validated, Stria will embark on follow-up exploration programs at its 100% owned Pontax and Willcox properties in tandem with pilot plant testing.

The Company’s aim is to position itself as a new, green technology source of technology lithium, an irreplaceable component for current and next-generation batteries.

Lithium metals today represent about 30% of global lithium consumption. By 2025, it is estimated that global consumption from the battery manufacturing sectors will account for some 65% of total global consumption.

Lithium-Ion Battery that Charges 120 Times Faster than Normal Developed

A super fast-charging lithium-ion battery capable of being recharged 30 to 120 times faster than conventional li-ion batteries has been developed by researchers.

The researchers think that they can use this technology to create a battery pack for electric vehicles that will fully charge in less than a minute.

The primary issue with rechargeable batteries is the increased charging time that results as their volume grows. Since batteries charge from the outside towards the inside, the thicker the battery becomes the longer it will takes to charge. This is solvable to a degree by breaking the larger battery into smaller individual cells, but there are limits to that.

“The Korean method takes the cathode material — standard lithium manganese oxide (LMO) in this case — and soaks it in a solution containing graphite. Then, by carbonizing the graphite-soaked LMO, the graphite turns into a dense network of conductive traces that run throughout the cathode. This new cathode is then packaged normally, with an electrolyte and graphite anode, to create the fast-charging li-ion battery. Other factors, such as the battery’s energy density and cycle life seem to remain unchanged.”

The networks of carbonized graphite created by this process essentially function as blood vessels. They allow nearly the whole of the battery to recharge at the same time, speeding the recharge up by 30 to 120 times.

“Now, for all intents and purposes, this is a standard lithium-ion battery that could be used in smartphones and laptops — but the network of conductive traces does increase the overall size of the battery, so it’s probably better suited for use in electric vehicles (EVs). Obviously, an EV that can be recharged in under a minute is pretty crazy — though it still only brings them in-line with their gas-guzzling cousins. Being able to charge quickly is convenient, but it doesn’t get around the fact that li-ion battery packs are incredibly expensive — and the Korean carbonized LMO battery certainly won’t be cheap.”

Fast-charging batteries for phones and computers sound very appealing, though, so I can’t imagine that this technology won’t end up being applied that way eventually. The researchers also mention potential applications in wireless mice and keyboards, and other small electronics.

Imagine being able to charge an electric car in a minute; cheap, fast, no gasoline fumes, and no CO2 emissions.
