St-Georges $SX.ca Lithium Extraction Technology Update

Posted by AGORACOM-JC at 6:02 PM on Wednesday, January 16th, 2019
  • successfully improved its lithium-in-clay extraction technology, as well as an important breakthrough regarding the processing of hard rock material

Montreal / January 16, 2019 St-Georges Eco-Mining Corp. (CSE: SX) (OTC: SXOOF) (FSE: 85G1) is pleased to report that it successfully improved its lithium-in-clay extraction technology, as well as an important breakthrough regarding the processing of hard rock material.

The Company previously reported back in December (See Press Release Dated December 20, 2018) that it had achieved the removal, by mechanical means, of 55% of the material processed from the Bonnie Claire lithium deposit fully owned by its partner Iconic Minerals ltd (TSX-V: ICM). At that point, 90% of the lithium contained in the initial material was later found in solution to be processed for recovery.

Additional tests have now improved the outlook on the recovery grade. Stage 2 selective leach processing has eliminated 70% of the material contained in the pregnant portion of the initial material. The company is now pleased to report that it found 100% of the initial lithium in solution post-leaching. The subsequent solution now represent between 12 to 15% of the initial material.

These simple steps eliminate the need for expensive processing of 85 to 87% of the initial material while retaining 100% of the lithium contained in the material from the deposit. This increase the lithium grade of the material to be further processed by 6 to 8 times.

From the 100% initial material, 55% is discarded mechanically, low cost lixiviation sets aside between 68 to 73% of the remaining material leaving approximately only 12 to 15% to be processed further.

The company is currently working on improving the leaching selectivity within its phase 2 development efforts. Phase 3 testing will focus on purifying the lithium to reach lithium hydroxide commercial quality.

Extraction of lithium from hard rocks.

The company has successfully tested its leaching approach with spodumene and other clay formations of lithium without pressure, calcining and high temperatures. This development can be applied to any hard feed which includes tailings, clay and hard rocks. St-Georges metallurgists are planning to initiate tests in the coming days with lepidolite lithium material available from St-Georges’ LeRoyal Project.

HSBC suggests it might have found a… use for blockchain?

  • HSBC claims to have settled three million foreign exchange (FX) transactions and made payments worth $250,000 using distributed ledger technology (DLT).
  • The bank said it had made “significant efficiencies” while using its DLT product, HSBC FX Everywhere, for the past year – suggesting the risk-averse financial sector is treating blockchain technology as a legitimate biz tool.

Says it used tech to settle 3 million forex transactions, $250k in payments last year

HSBC claims to have settled three million foreign exchange (FX) transactions and made payments worth $250,000 using distributed ledger technology (DLT).

The bank said it had made “significant efficiencies” while using its DLT product, HSBC FX Everywhere, for the past year – suggesting the risk-averse financial sector is treating blockchain technology as a legitimate biz tool.

In a statement, the bank revealed it had been using a share-permissioned ledger for payments on its internal balance sheets. “It transforms the process around intra-company foreign exchange activity, automating several manual procedures and reducing reliance on external settlement networks.”

The DLT was used for 3 million FX transactions and 150,000 payments, which HSBC admitted was a small proportion when compared with traditional processes.

The much-hyped technology has long been criticised by observers who see it as a solution in search of a problem, as over-eager vendors stick the buzzword on everything they can.

A recent study of its use in the international development sector found no evidence of success – rather just “a proliferation of press releases, white papers, and persuasively written articles”.

Up until now, the most common example of a practical use of blockchain – where it was being used to solve a problem in a way other tech couldn’t – has been in supply chain management, although such deployments haven’t been a raging success for a variety of reasons.

HSBC’s announcement, which discusses three main benefits for its use in FX trading, is also notable because risk-averse financial institutions are typically regarded as being less keen on untested emerging technologies.

But the bank’s interim global head of FX and commodities, Richard Bibbey, said that it was now looking into using DLT to help multinational clients with multiple treasury centres and cross-border supply chains to “better manage foreign exchange flows within their organisations”.

In listing the benefits, HSBC said the singularity, transparency and immutability provided by DLT created a “shared, single version of the truth of intra-company trades” from execution to settlement, reducing “risk of discrepancy and delay”.

Meanwhile, confirmation and settlement can be automated by matching and netting transactions – reducing costs and reliance on external settlement network – and a consolidated, global view of cash flows and certainty of funds “supports greater balance sheet optimisation”. ®

Investors bet on nickel prices and nickel stocks to rally in 2019

  • Class 1 nickel demand forecast to increase 17 fold from 2017 to 2025 due to the EV boom
  • According to McKinsey research if annual electric vehicle (EV) production reaches 31 million vehicles by 2025 as expected then demand for high-purity class 1 nickel is likely to increase significantly from 33 Kt in 2017 to 570 Kt in 2025

Matthew Bohlsen

Use of nickel has been traced as far back as 3,500 BC. In more recent times nickel has been used in coins (a nickel), but is best known for its use in stainless steel driven mostly by Chinese construction. With the current negative sentiment due to the US-China trade war and some mild slowdown in China, nickel prices have fallen to a low level, as have the nickel miners. Provided we don’t head into a significant China or global slowdown, any resolution in the trade war with China should lead to some recovery in nickel prices and the nickel miner’s stock prices.

Class 1 nickel demand forecast to increase 17 fold from 2017 to 2025 due to the EV boom

According to McKinsey research if annual electric vehicle (EV) production reaches 31 million vehicles by 2025 as expected then demand for high-purity class 1 nickel is likely to increase significantly from 33 Kt in 2017 to 570 Kt in 2025. Class 1 nickel is the “high purity” nickel that is used in electric vehicle lithium ion batteries. The stainless steel industry uses both class 1 and class 2 nickel (lower purity) and is the main driver of overall nickel demand.

McKinsey also states that “a shortfall in class 1 nickel production seems increasingly likely as current low nickel prices do not support class 1 nickel capacity expansions and alternative strategies, as a result, not only will nickel prices likely need to move towards incentive pricing but the future pricing mechanism is likely to reflect two distinct nickel products: class 1 and class 2. At the same time we expect to see two distinct nickel price mechanisms emerge reflecting two distinct commodities: class 2 nickel, primarily for use in stainless steel production, trading at a lower price that reflects its abundant supply; and class 1 nickel trading at LME prices – or above for high-end nickel powders and pellets used to make nickel sulfates – reflecting required incentive prices.”

The key to understand here is that the nickel sulfide ore miners have a distinct cost advantage when producing the nickel sulfate required for EV batteries, and demand for class 1 (high purity) nickel is set to skyrocket.

  • The New York City Economic Development Corporation’s (EDC) new Blockchain Center opened Thursday, and intends to begin testing the tech’s use cases next fall, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

New York City may begin testing blockchain technology for various use cases later this year.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation’s (EDC) new Blockchain Center opened Thursday, and intends to begin testing the tech’s use cases next fall, Bloomberg reported Thursday. The center is part of a partnership with the venture capital fund Future\Perfect Ventures and the Global Blockchain Business Council trade organization.

It is unclear at this time which areas these use cases may cover. The EDC is a non-profit corporation which aims to support economic growth within the city. It acts as New York’s official economic development corporation.

New York City itself has contributed $100,000 to the new Blockchain Center, and the facility will continue to raise funds through corporate partnerships and membership dues.

Microsoft Corporation and IBM have already partnered with the center, Future\Perfect Ventures managing partner Jalak Jobanputra told Bloomberg.

The new center, based in the Flatiron District, will offer classes on coding and host lectures aimed at both developers in the space and the general public.

The move comes as a number of crypto startups began laying off employees due to an ongoing bear market, but this is not necessarily a concern for the center.

Ana Arino, chief strategy officer with the EDC, told Bloomberg that the center was “playing the long game,” adding:

“It’s a nascent technology, so there’s bound to be uncertainty around this evolution from year to year. While we don’t know what the future holds, we want to make sure we have a seat at the table shaping it.”

A number of companies are beginning to set up shop within New York, including Coinbase, which opened a new office in the city last fall. Canaan, a maker of bitcoin mining hardware, is also reportedly considering launching an initial public offering in the city.

The EDC did not respond to a request for comment by press time.

Clone Production at Marijuana Company of America’s $MCOA Scio Oregon Hemp Project Underway – Hemp Growers License Renewed for 2019 $AERO $CBDS $CGRW $APH.ca $GBLX $ACG $ACB $WEED.ca $HIP.ca

  • Clone production for the 2019 season at their Scio, Oregon High Yielding CBD Hemp project is now in high gear, in preparation for an “as early as possible” planting this year
  • Unlike 2018, which had a late start to planting due to delays in finalizing the acquisition of the project’s 109 acre farm, preparations are underway so that planting of this year’s crop can begin in late May to early June.

ESCONDIDO, Calif., Jan. 10, 2019 – via NetworkWire – MARIJUANA COMPANY OF AMERICA INC. (“MCOA” or the “Company”) (OTC: MCOA), an innovative hemp and cannabis corporation, and its Joint Venture partner Global Hemp Group Inc. (CSE: GHG/ OTC: GBHPF/ FRA: GHG) are pleased to announce that clone production for the 2019 season at their Scio, Oregon High Yielding CBD Hemp project is now in high gear, in preparation for an “as early as possible” planting this year. Unlike 2018, which had a late start to planting due to delays in finalizing the acquisition of the project’s 109 acre farm, preparations are underway so that planting of this year’s crop can begin in late May to early June. This will provide an additional 45 to 60 days of growing time compared to last year, allowing time for the hemp plants to get considerably larger, which will generate a greater quantity of biomass.

For 2019, the project will cultivate three hemp strains which will offer high CBD content, substantial biomass yield, and ultra low THC levels, along with superior pest resistance and disease tolerance. These strains also have a shorter flowering period, which will allow for an earlier harvest, before the usual Fall rainy season begins in the region.

The hardiest phenotypes were selected for mother plants that will feed the cloning process, which began back in November 2018 soon after the recent harvest and drying operation was complete. This cloning operation will produce the approximately 40,000+ clones required to plant on the farm’s lower 35 acres.

The Scio team is now upgrading the lighting and electrical in the greenhouses for continued expansion of the cloning operation.  It is expected that the cloning operations will produce an excess of clones beyond what is required for the Scio project, which will allow for the sale to other farms in the area. The team continues to talk with local farmers that are interested in partnering to cultivate hemp for the coming season. On-site clone operations will eliminate the need of capital outlay to purchase clones from other growers as was required in 2018 as the result of the late start, an expense of over US$200,000.

In addition, the project’s operating company, Covered Bridge Acres (CBA), has received its registration to cultivate hemp for 2019 from the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Also, for the 2019 season, CBA is now registered to produce or handle agricultural hemp seed, so that the company can establish a breeding program that will potentially generate additional revenue for the project.

Management is currently searching for an offsite warehouse to store biomass and complete hammer mill processing of the material produced from the 2018 harvest. Once the location has been secured, CBA will complete its Land Use Compatibility Statement (LUCS) and apply for its 2019 Industrial Hemp Handler registration that will enable CBA to further process (extract) its material. Management is in ongoing discussions with several potential off takers and processing partners in an effort to monetize the 2018 biomass and prepare for the upcoming 2019 season which will produce significantly more material.

  • The U.S. Department of Energy has announced federal funding of up to $4.8 million for universities working on R&D projects, including those related to blockchain.

Yogita Khatri

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced federal funding of up to $4.8 million for universities working on R&D projects, including those related to blockchain.

Announced Monday, the funding is being made available through the department’s Office of Fossil Energy as a part of the “University Training and Research” initiative aimed to develop fossil energy applications.

Projects under the initiative are aimed at achieving various objectives, including the development of early-stage technologies for more affordable domestic energy resources and improved electric grids, the department said.

One of the areas being targeted for funding is blockchain technology that would “secure process signal data and other information flows within distributed sensor networks for fossil-based power generation systems.”

Other potential projects not necessarily including blockchain include those that would explore advanced computing resources for coal plants to generate analytical results, improve water reuse processes, and investigate physical and biological sciences to measure chemical elements within coal fly ash.

The department said it funds research and development projects to reduce the “risk and cost” of advanced fossil fuel-based energy technologies and make more sustainable use of fossil resources in the U.S.

This is not the first time that the department has looked to explore blockchain for technological improvements. Last January, it partnered with BlockCypher to develop solutions allowing energy transactions to be settled across multiple blockchains.

And, in July 2018, the department awarded a grant of nearly $1 million to a Colorado-based blockchain startup Grid7 in a move aimed to advance the development of a decentralized energy grid.
