A recent study investigating how foods impact gut health in children points to plant-based proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, and grains as key to a diverse and healthy microbiome.

There has been a wealth of evidence collected on how important the gut microbiome is for health maintenance, but little research has been done on how diet habits are related to gut health in prepubescent children. A recent study took a closer look.

The study,1 published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, reveals that gut health in young children and pre-pubescent teenagers is both dynamic and diverse, and is particularly responsive to certain food groups.

“The gut microbiome remains dynamic for children past 3 years of age and responds to dietary differences,” says lead author Dena Herman, PhD, MPH, RD, professor at California State University, Northridge and director of the MCH Nutrition Leadership Training Program at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. “This represents an opportunity to learn healthy habits early in life so that they can be sustained over the life course to maximize health.”

The health of the gut plays a vital role in maintaining health and supporting immune functions, the study notes. The microbiome is impacted by a number of factors, with individualized diets being one of the most important determinants of a diverse gut environment.

The microbiome of the gut is created at birth, the study notes, but continues to develop throughout infancy and is significantly affected throughout childhood by diet. There is a large shift in the composition of the gut as infants are weaned and begin consuming solid foods, with the makeup of the gut resembling that of adults by about age 3 years. Little research has been done on the makeup of the childhood gut between 3 years of age and the adolescent years, the study notes, but dietary patterns have been associated with significant differences in the guts of children in the age range of 4 to 8 years. As diets have shifted more toward a Western diet, heavily featuring highly processed foods and high-fat animal products, more and more diseases have been attributed to an imbalance in the microbial composition of the gut, the study reveals.

To examine how diet influenced gut health in the study group, researchers asked parents to collect fecal samples and quantitative 24-hour diet recalls, investigating each 3 times, each time about 6 days apart. The team examined how diet impacted gut health by splitting children into groups based on the types of food they consumed. Protein consumption—both animal- and plant-based—was the only food group that was associated with gut diversity. Total grain and vegetable consumption, on the other hand, heavily influenced the community makeup of the microbiome, the study notes. The research team noted some surprise here, in that yogurt was the only animal-derived food that was associated with the membership and structure of the microbiome. Instead, proteins were more closely linked to higher levels of diversity in the types of microorganisms found in the gut, the study states. The most abundant microorganisms found in the study groups were Bacteroides and Prevotella. The first was tied to Western diets, and the latter to fiber-rich diets.

Adequate diversity in the microbiome samples was noted, with results appropriate for the cohort’s age group. The research team found that older children in the study group had more diversity in their gut microbiomes, and that gender had no impact on the results. There were a number of trends noted with different food groups, such as lower diversity with a high non- whole-food grain consumption, and abundance of certain bacteria groups with higher consumption of fruit and fiber.

Overall, the study revealed that fresh fruits and vegetable consumption led to increased variation in the structure of the microbiome—with citrus, melon, and berries contributing most to gut diversity. Whole and non-whole grains were key to maintaining gut health, immune health, and glucose regulation, Herman stated. B-vitamins also played a big role in gut health, contributing to microbiome structure and composition, she says.

The 2- to 9-year-old group studied in this report is significant, because this represents a time when diets are becoming more diverse, and children begin to explore and become more independent in their eating habits. The study highlights the need to make this time count, the study notes, with guidance from adults on healthy eating habits to help promote good health and disease prevention in adulthood.

“Early and middle childhood may represent a crucial window when the gut microbiome might still be amenable to lasting manipulations through diet,” the study reveals.

The study emphasizes the importance of diet in the development of a healthy microbiome during the childhood years, with non-whole-grain foods enriched with vitamins and minerals being perhaps one of the largest contributors to gut health in this pilot sample.

“There are many benefits of a healthy gut for children. First and foremost, is an enhanced immune response. Young children are often more susceptible to upper respiratory tract infections and ear infections, especially if they are in childcare and as they enter school,” Herman explains. “By maintaining a diverse diet, children have a better chance of maximizing the healthy bacteria that can support immune health.”

The benefits of a healthy gut don’t end with physical health, she adds. Mental health effects were not the focus of the study, Herman says, but there has been prior research drawing a strong connection between gut health and brain health.

“For children this could translate into better focus in school allowing them to reach their academic potential. Unlike other studies, this study showed that children past 3 years of age are still able to change the structure and membership of their microbiome through the foods that they eat,” she says. “This is exciting and helps us extend the findings from studies in adults to children. The benefits described for children are similar for adults. However, as we age we have increased risk for inflammation, which can lead to higher rates of chronic diseases including cancers. That is why it is important to start healthy habits as early in life as possible.”

Although the study was small, it was more detailed than most previously conducted research examining gut health in children, she says. It highlights the benefits of plant-based diets, which Herman says she hopes will convince parents and clinicians to make changes—both for their children and themselves.

“I would hope that the results we have shared provide further support for the promotion of a plant-based diet—not only for young children, but also for adults. Parents are role models for their children’s eating habits and this study shows that we can actively engage in making positive changes to our gut health and overall health starting at a young age,” Herman says. “As a pediatric dietitian myself, I would hope that we could work together with the medical community, particularly pediatricians, to promote healthy habits including healthful eating habits and regular exercise through anticipatory guidance at all well-child visits. With the high rates of obesity in the United States, having children consume foods that support reduced risk for obesity may translate into lower risks for obesity-related diseases in adulthood such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Starting this practice as early as possible will ensure the most benefit for these children and generations to come.”

Commercialization

Kontrol will begin the commercialization process of BioCloud by initiating an application to the CSA Group. CSA is a leader in Standards Development and in Testing, Inspection and Certification around the world including Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia. The CSA registered mark shows that a product has been independently tested and certified to meet recognized standards for safety or performance. Kontrol anticipates that a CSA approval can take from 30 to 45 days to complete and Kontrol has a history of working with CSA on various air quality and emission products. During the process of CSA approval, Kontrol will seek to establish lower detection limits of the COVID-19 virus. Lower detection limit specifications are part of the commercial specifications that Kontrol will deliver for a fully commercialized product.

These projects were already well in place before the pandemic but will play a bigger role post-COVID, serving as an example for other retailers seeking to incorporate technology. These AI-inspired solutions are customer-centric and could potentially take over the role of store associates, which helps reduce the risks for retail employees at this time. 

IoT 

If AI solutions are adopted for enhanced services and to ease the burden of store personnel, IoT is then famed for their data-driven approaches to turbocharge core operations in retail. 

Recently, Auchan Retail Portugal, with a network of 34 supermarkets and hypermarkets across the European country, announced it would deploy a fleet of autonomous robots for optimized shelf monitoring. 

These autonomous robots will circle around the stores up to three times daily to capture photos of every shelf and aisle. The captured photos are then digitized at scale with computer vision and IoT, and then converted into reports with actionable insights for store staff to act upon. The reports delivered through a mobile app will boost store employees’ efficiency in managing, prioritizing, and resolving shelf issues.Andre Vieira, Digital Director at Auchan Retail Portugal, noted that “innovation, through the search for digital strategies, focused on people and improving customer service is one of Auchan’s great bets. Data provided by BDSA indicates that cannabis sales continued their robust expansion in 5 Western states. During July, the eleventh month after the onset of the vaping crisis and the fifth month of the pandemic impacting the market, sales across the five markets totaled $842.8 million, up 12% from June, which sequential increases of 2% in May and 14% in April. March had spiked to $666.0 million from $579.9 million in February as customers purchased cannabis ahead of store closures and concerns about limitations on access, so clearly cannabis sales are back on track. With the near-term effects of the pandemic now behind us, it’s clear that cannabis demand is surging, even in relatively mature markets, like Oregon and Colorado. Nevada continued to recover as tourism slowly returns, with sales growing 23%. California stood out with 15% sequential growth, while Colorado expanded 13%. Oregon sales climbed 6% and Arizona by 3%, but both of these states had meteoric growth from a year ago. July had one more day than June, which has the effect of adding 3% roughly.

Overall sales growth from a year ago among the five Western markets ranged from 26% in California to as high as 54% in Arizona. Nevada has been impacted by the tourist slowdown but still grew 37% from a year ago. Oregon continued its strong growth, rising 44%, while Colorado grew 35%. Concentrates represented 22-37% of sales by market, below the 26-38% share of sales last August before the vaping crisis hit.

Here is a closer look at each market, as detailed by BDSA:

Arizona

In July 2020, cannabis sales in Arizona’s medical dispensaries reached $94.2 million, growing three percent from June and over 54 percent compared to the previous July. Year-to-date through July, sales have reached $589.2 million, increasing by $194.5 million and 49 percent compared to the same period last year.

Flower sales accounted for nearly 48 percent of overall revenue for the month with $44.8 million in sales, growing one percent from June. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for just under four percent of revenue with $3.5 million in sales. Compared to the previous July, Flower sales increased by 52 percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by 83 percent.

Concentrate sales accounted for about 37 percent of overall revenues with sales totaling $34.6 million in July, increasing six percent from the trailing month. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $21.8 million in sales, accounting for 63 percent of the Arizona Concentrates market and over 23 percent of sales across all categories. Compared to July 2019, sales of Dabbable Concentrates grew by 92 percent, while Vape sales grew by 46 percent.

The Ingestibles category accounted for nearly 11 percent of sales in July with $10 million in revenue for the month. Compared to July 2019 and June 2020, sales in the category grew by 47 percent and by four percent, respectively. In July, the $9.3 million in sales from Edibles generated nearly 93 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining seven percent. Compared to the previous July, Edibles sales increased by 59 percent and Sublingual sales decreased by 30 percent.

California

BDSA sales reporting for the month of July reflects the state market of 699 licensed dispensary locations and 306 delivery operators.

In July 2020, cannabis sales for state licensed retailers and delivery services reached $334.4 million, growing 15 percent from the trailing month and 26 percent compared to July 2019. Year to date, sales in California have reached $1.9 billion, a 14 percent increase compared to the same period in 2019.

Sales from Flower generated $136.2 million in July 2020, accounting for nearly 41 percent of overall revenues. Compared to the trailing month and July 2019, Flower sales grew by 17 percent and 53 percent, respectively. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for nearly 11 percent of overall July revenues, with $35.6 million in sales.

Concentrates were the second-largest revenue category in July 2020, reaching $101 million in sales and accounting for over 30 percent of total revenue. Compared to the trailing month and July 2019, sales increased by 13 percent and by four percent, respectively. The $76 million in Vape sales accounted for over 75 percent of the Concentrates category and 23 percent of the month’s overall sales revenue.

In July 2020, Ingestibles generated $50.8 million in sales, increasing by 11 percent from the trailing month. Compared to July 2019, sales of Ingestibles grew by nearly 21 percent. Edibles contributed 86 percent of Ingestibles revenue, while Sublinguals made up the remaining 14 percent. Compared to July 2019, the Edibles and Sublinguals categories grew by 32 percent and declined by 22 percent, respectively.

Colorado

July 2020 was another milestone for the Colorado cannabis market. Sales in Colorado’s adult-use and medical dispensaries reached a combined $226.8 million, growing 13 percent from June. Compared to the previous July, sales increased by nearly 35 percent. Adult-use sales grew by 33 percent from July 2019 while medical sales grew by 41 percent. Year-to-date through July, combined channel sales have reached over $1.2 billion, increasing 22 percent from the same period last year.

In July, Flower sales accounted for over 47 percent of total monthly revenues, totaling at $107.2 million. Flower sales increased nearly 11 percent from the trailing month and grew 56 percent from the previous July. Year-to-date sales have increased by 40 percent in the category over the same period last year. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked separately from Flower, generated $13.2 million in sales for July 2020, growing 31 percent from July 2019 and increasing 17 percent from the trailing month.

The $66.5 million in Concentrate sales during July 2020 represented an 18 percent increase from the previous year and 15 percent growth from the trailing month. The category accounted for over 29 percent of revenue for the month. Vape products, the largest segment within the Concentrates category, reached $32.9 million in July sales, increasing 19 percent compared to June and four percent from the previous July, respectively. The Vape category accounted almost 50 percent of Concentrates’ revenue and 15 percent of overall sales for the month.

In July 2020, sales from Ingestibles generated $34.7 million, a 27 percent increase from July 2019. Compared to the trailing month, sales in the category grew by 17 percent. Edibles generated $32.7 million in monthly sales revenue, contributing over 94 percent to category sales and 14 percent of total revenue for the month. Sublinguals made up the remaining six percent of Ingestibles sales, totaling $1.9 million for the month.

Nevada

In July, Nevada dispensaries generated $82 million in sales. Compared to July of 2019, sales grew by 37 percent and by nearly 23 percent compared to the trailing month. Year-to-date through July, sales have reached $421.9 million, growing by six percent compared to the same period last year.

Flower sales accounted for nearly 54 percent of overall July 2020 sales. Sales in the category reached $44.1 million for the month, growing 27 percent from June. Pre-rolled Joints, tracked separately from Flower, accounted for nearly 11 percent of July sales, with $8.8 million in revenue. Compared to July 2019, Flower and Pre-rolled Joints sales have increased by 75 percent and by two percent, respectively.

Concentrate sales in July reached $18.3 million, accounting for more than 22 percent of overall revenue for the month. Compared to the trailing month as well as to the previous July, category sales increased by 17 percent. Vape products, the largest segment in the Concentrates category, generated $13.3 million for the month, contributing nearly 73 percent to Concentrates revenue and over 16 percent to total monthly sales.

Sales in the Ingestibles category accounted for 11 percent of all revenues, totaling $9.1 million in July sales and growing by about seven percent from the previous year. Compared to June, category sales grew by 17 percent. Edibles made up 90 percent of the Ingestibles category, reaching $8.2 million in July revenue, and Sublingual sales contributed the remaining ten percent.

Oregon

In July 2020, cannabis sales in Oregon’s medical and adult-use dispensaries reached a combined $106 million. Compared to the trailing month, sales in the Oregon market grew by about six percent, while compared to July 2019, sales grew by 45 percent overall. Year-to-date sales in Oregon have reached $620.3 million, growing by 39 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

Sales of Flower generated $50.3 million in July 2020, accounting for 47 percent of overall revenues. Compared to the trailing month, Flower sales grew by four percent, and compared to July 2019, sales increased by 65 percent. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for nine percent of overall revenues with $9.8 million in sales.

Concentrates generated $27.7 million in July sales. Compared to the trailing month and July 2019, sales in the category increased five percent and just over 25 percent, respectively. Vape products, the largest segment in the Concentrates category, generated $15 million in July, contributing over 54 percent of Concentrates sales and more than 14 percent of total monthly revenue.

In July 2020, Ingestibles generated over $14.6 million in sales, a nine percent increase from the previous month and nearly 25 percent compared to July 2019. Edibles, which made up 83 percent of the Ingestibles category and more than 11 percent of overall monthly sales, generated $12 million in July 2020.

Pelletization is the process in which iron ore is concentrated before shipment, thus significantly reducing the cost of transportation. In conventional technologies, the process heat is provided by fuel oil or natural gas burners (both environmentally damaging). VANCOUVER, BC, Sept. 1, 2020  – TGS Esports Inc. (“TGS” or the “Company“) (TSX-V: TGS) is pleased to announce that it has taken the next step in its growth strategy to provide a consolidated end to end esports experience to players and tournament organizers by executing a letter of intent dated August 28, 2020 (the “LOI“) to acquire Pepper Esports Inc. (“Pepper“), a leading competitive esports platform (the “Acquisition“). In addition, the Pepper executive team, Guy Halford-Thompson, Jackson Warren and Ben Hoffman, with over a decade of combined experience in growing early stage companies in the public markets, are expected to join TGS executive team on the closing of the Acquisition (the “Closing“). Under the terms of the LOI, TGS is expected to acquire all of the outstanding securities of Pepper by way of a three-cornered amalgamation.

The Pepper platform offers an advanced suite of tools for league operators, tournament operators, and venue owners to setup and manage esports communities and run world class events. These include key innovations, such as Pepper’s automatic game scoring technology, which uses its patent pending AI engine and saves event organizers hundreds of hours of setup time, while also providing players and attendees with a vastly improved experience.

Transaction Highlights

  • Develop New Revenue Streams – the Acquisition is expected to provide TGS with diverse new online revenue streams that include data monetization, payment processing and recurring subscription revenue.

“Rather than sending our players to third party platforms for online events, and missing out on key revenue, we will now be able to keep players within our ecosystem while also generating revenue directly from the Pepper platform,” said Spiro Khouri, CEO of TGS. “This acquisition brings an important technology platform to TGS, making our business model scalable, global, and with defensible IP.”

“This acquisition will fast track our ability to scale the Pepper platform by leveraging the existing customers and expertise of the TGS team, and we hope to bring accelerated revenue growth to TGS once the Pepper platform is fully launched,” said Guy Halford-Thompson, CEO of Pepper. “Becoming part of TGS is a big milestone for the company.”

The global market for esports tournaments is expected to be USD $1.598 billion by 2023 according to an August 2020 report by Statista, with few dominant game-agnostic service providers that are publicly traded.

Summary of Acquisition

The LOI sets out the principal terms on which the parties have agreed to complete the Acquisition. The parties have agreed to negotiate in good faith to formalize a definitive agreement (the “Definitive Agreement“) on or before October 30, 2020, and they have agreed to a mutual exclusivity and due diligence period expiring 45 days from the date of the LOI.

On Closing, the Company will acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Pepper (the “Pepper Shares“) in consideration for 43,385,664 common shares of the Company (each a “TGS Share“, and such TGS Shares issued as consideration for the Acquisition, the “Consideration Shares“) at a deemed price of $0.14 per Consideration Share for aggregate deemed consideration of approximately $6,073,993. The Consideration Shares will be subject to a contractual lock-up, with 20% of the Consideration Shares being released on the Closing and a further 20% being released every six months thereafter.

Each outstanding security of Pepper that is convertible or exchangeable for Pepper Shares will be exchanged for corresponding securities that are convertible or exchangeable for TGS Shares on substantially the same economic conditions.

On Closing, Pepper will have the right to appoint a nominee to the board of directors of the Company.

The LOI contains, and the Definitive Agreement will provide for, customary representations, warranties and covenants including non-solicitation and a right to match any superior proposal. Completion of the Acquisition remains subject to a number of conditions, including: (i) the approval of the Acquisition by the shareholders of Pepper, (ii) the completion of satisfactory due diligence, (iii) the approval of the boards of directors of the Company and Pepper, (iv) the execution of the Definitive Agreement, (v) obtaining all required consents, waivers and approvals, including the approval of the TSX Venture Exchange, and (vi) other closing conditions customary for transactions of this nature.

Haywood Securities Inc. has acted as a financial advisor to Pepper in connection with the Acquisition.

The Company and Pepper deal at arm’s length with each other, and the Acquisition is not expected to result in a change of control of the Company.  A finder’s fee in an amount to be determined at a later time may be payable in connection with the Acquisition, subject to compliance with applicable securities laws and the approval of the TSXV.
