Canadian Cannabis Sales Growth: An Analysis

  • Statistics Canada released June data on cannabis retail sales last week. Nationwide, June retail sales hit $91.1M, which implies an annual run-rate of $1.1B in cannabis sales across Canada.

By: SmallCapPower

Statistics Canada reported that Canadian cannabis sales on a retail level for June continue to show growth across Canada, driven by new retail locations in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta

In Canada, unadjusted sales of cannabis in stores have grown by 120% between October 2018 and June 2019 (Figure 1). In our opinion, recreational cannabis sales are set to continue growing with the upcoming legalization of edibles expected in October 2019. With the increasing demand for cannabis products, there are concerns for Canada’s ability to avoid a supply shortage. For instance, Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, currently has 25 retail locations (plans to increase to 67 by October 2019). As it is a heavily-concentrated area for cannabis companies, with Canopy Growth and Aphria being headquartered in the province, there is the largest demand for cannabis at about 2.9M users. We believe that there are currently not enough retailers to meet demand and as more retailers come on-line,  nationwide sales are expected to increase.

Based on Statistics Canada’s June retail sales data, retail sales are at the highest level since legalization back in October 2018 and have reached an annualized run-rate of $1.1B. Retail sales grew 6% month-over-month (MoM), a decrease of 900 basis points from the prior month. By our estimates this represents ~20% legal market penetration of the illicit market, as Statistics Canada reported that in 2018 total sales of cannabis in Canada totalled ~$6B.

Figure 2: Statistics Canada: Sales Figures by Province

Source: Statistics Canada, Ubika

There was an initial bump in retail sales in April 2019, which coincided with new store openings nationwide particularly in Ontario, but that growth seems to have tapered off in June. Notably, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia have seen MoM growth of 13%, 8%, 5%, and 18%, respectively, driven by 69 new brick-and-mortar retail locations opening from April to June (24 in Ontario, 2 in Quebec, 30 in Alberta, and 13 in British Columbia). Retail sales are expected to continue to increase as additional retail stores are added, particularly in Ontario. Currently, Ontario has approximately 1 store per 115,000 people, compared with Alberta, which has 1 store for every 10,000 people. Ontario has ~740 liquor stores (1 store/20,000 people) and Alberta has ~875 liquor stores (1 store/5000 people). We are of the opinion that Ontario could support ~1,500 cannabis retail stores, which would bring store saturation to ~1 store/10,000 people. Going into the second half of 2019, we expect steady growth in store openings, in particular Ontario, where the OCS has announced the 42 winners of the cannabis retail lottery, which will bring the total number of retail locations in Ontario to 67. This highlights that with an already underserved market, the provinces will have to start increasing the number retail locations per province to satisfy demand.

Hemp industry awaits new USDA rules

  • Hemp was decriminalized in the 2018 Farm Bill thanks to legislation sponsored by Wyden, fellow Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
  • Wyden addressed the state of the hemp industry during a panel discussion Aug. 19 at the Western U.S. Hemp Growers Conference and Expo in Portland. He said Oregon is “at the epicenter of the enormous potential for the hemp in the country.”

By GEORGE PLAVEN

PORTLAND — New rules for growing and testing hemp are coming this fall from the USDA, and that has farmers anxious about establishing consistent standards for the booming crop.

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said the agency expects to issue regulations in the next two to four weeks.

Hemp was decriminalized in the 2018 Farm Bill thanks to legislation sponsored by Wyden, fellow Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Wyden addressed the state of the hemp industry during a panel discussion Aug. 19 at the Western U.S. Hemp Growers Conference and Expo in Portland. He said Oregon is “at the epicenter of the enormous potential for the hemp in the country.”

“We have an enormous sense of pride with the incredible growth in this industry, virtually overnight,” Wyden said.

Since 2014, the state has gone from 13 registered hemp growers and 105 acres to 1,883 growers and roughly 62,000 acres, according to the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 that passed Congress with bipartisan support — led by unlikely allies in Wyden, Merkley and McConnell — classified hemp as an agricultural commodity.

“I think it’s pretty obvious you are on the right side of history,” Wyden told the crowd gathered for the conference. “You don’t have thousands of farmers moving into this space for nothing.”

Hemp, like marijuana, is a cannabis plant, though it legally contains less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main ingredient that gets users high.

While hemp fiber can be used to make paper, textiles, clothing and building materials such as “hempcrete,” the current primary market is for products containing a derivative extract known as cannabidiol, or CBD. Companies are putting CBD in everything from cosmetics to beverages, touting numerous benefits.

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service is now developing a program to implement the Hemp Farming Act, which requires states and tribes as the primary regulators of hemp to comply with federal standards for testing THC levels, inspecting farms and monitoring overall production.

States will submit their detailed plans for approval once the regulations are announced, going into effect for the 2020 planting season.

Sunny Summers, cannabis policy coordinator for ODA, said Oregon already does testing and tracks production under the state’s hemp pilot program. Such pilot programs were permitted by the 2014 Farm Bill.

“This is not anything new,” Summers said. “We should be setting the standard for the country.”

The goal, Summers said, is to begin treating hemp the same as any other crop. But she said the industry still has challenges ahead, pointing to issues such as the potential for cross-pollination of crops, pesticide drift and managing odor.

“Coexistence is the backbone of Oregon agriculture,” Summers said. “The industry is going to have to come together and find those opportunities to coexist.”

Courtney Moran, a hemp lobbyist and president of the Oregon Industrial Hemp Farmers Association, said the USDA rules should clarify uncertainties for hemp growers and producers around interstate commerce, banking, crop insurance and law enforcement.

“No matter where you’re going, we want to make sure crops are legal and compliant,” Moran said.

The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for regulating and classifying CBD products. Wyden said he was told that could take three to five more years, which he pushed back against forcefully.

The government is starting to make progress implementing the Hemp Farming Act, Wyden said, but needs to move faster.

“CBD products have enormous potential. And that was the whole purpose of the bill,” Wyden said. “We don’t want to see that potential squelched because the feds are moving too slowly.”

Spyder #Cannabis $SPDR.ca – Alberta squeaks out title as Canada’s top cannabis market with $123.6M sold $CGC $ACB $APH $CRON.ca $HEXO.ca $OGI.ca

SPONSOR: Spyder Cannabis (SPDR:TSXV) went public just a couple of months ago and hit the ground running with 5 operating Canadian retail locations – and a 6th one on the way via an 8,000 sq ft super store in Alberta.  Most companies would be ecstatic to have this number of locations – but Spyder just announced a major move into the United States, with a 5 location deal for boutique stores up and down the US Eastern seaboard.  The news gets better.  If all goes well with these 5 locations, the US outlet partner has a total of 39 locations across 20 states for Spyder to grow into to. Alberta squeaks out title as Canada’s top cannabis market with $123.6M sold

Ontario, Quebec not far behind in new data showing sales since legalization

  • Albertans pull out their wallets for legal weed more often than other Canadians, new data shows.
  • Statistics Canada has published new information on the amount sold at cannabis store across the country, from legalization in October 2018 to June 2019.

The sales data shows that Alberta comes out as the top legal cannabis market in Canada, with more than $123.6 million in sales.

Alberta narrowly squeaked into the top spot with Ontario close behind at $121.6 million, followed by Quebec at $119.2 million.

‘Best job of any province,’ retailer says

Alberta’s quick pick-up in the cannabis market can be attributed to the province’s regulator â€” Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) — argues Darren Bondar, who runs a national chain of cannabis stores out of Calgary.

“Alberta and the AGLC have done the best job of any province in the country,” the Spirit Leaf CEO said.

He notes AGLC had experience with private liquor stores, which helped them co-ordinate the opening of 275 private cannabis vendors.

The province also runs a public website that sells and mails out cannabis products.

Ontario may soon surpass Alberta in sales, however. The province was slow in getting stores open but expects to see another 50 open this fall.

Another of Canada’s most populous provinces, British Columbia, saw slow sales, coming ninth on the list. Smaller provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, saw more money spent.

Canada’s first cannabis competition

Alberta can also boast the country’s first legal cannabis competition when Hempfest Expo opens this October in Calgary. A big draw for other international cannabis hotspots, like Colorado and Amsterdam, expectations for Hempfest Cup are high.

The competition runs Oct. 11-12 at Stampede Park, and will boast entries from big and little growers alike â€” even Canadians who are (legally) growing plants in their homes or yards. Registration for the event closes Sept. 12.

Rob Gronkowski Announces New Line Of CBD Products, Leaves Door Open For Return To Football

  • Rob Gronkowski’s “next chapter” involves a campaign to get professional sports leagues to loosen their restrictions on CBD products.
  • Retired former Patriots tight end announced at a press conference in New York City on Tuesday that he has partnered with Abacus Health to launch a line of CBD products, after Gronkowski said the products changed his life.

BOSTON (CBS) — Rob Gronkowski’s “next chapter” involves a campaign to get professional sports leagues to loosen their restrictions on CBD products.

The retired former Patriots tight end announced at a press conference in New York City on Tuesday that he has partnered with Abacus Health to launch a line of CBD products, after Gronkowski said the products changed his life.

“I immediately made CBDMedic part of my recovery,” Gronkowski said of his post-retirement treatment. “And now for the first time in more than a decade, I am pain-free. And that is a big deal.”

Citing his countless injuries and his nine surgeries during his playing career, Gronkowski said he had no choice but to retire.

“[The injuries] took an absolute beating on my mind and my soul. I was hurt both mentally and physically, day in and day out,” Gronkowski said. “I decided to walk away from the game for one reason: I had to recover.”

Gronkowski said his own results have led to him choosing to make a plea to professional sports leagues to allow active players to use CBD products to treat their own injuries.

“It’s just time,” he said.

Gronkowski was asked the question that’s been asked by everyone and anyone over the past few months: Is he returning to the NFL? Gronkowski got emotional when answering the question.

“It’s crazy. I understand. I feel that love. But I want to be clear to my fans: I needed to recover. I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down. And I didn’t like it. And I was losing that joy in life. Like, the joy. I’m sorry right now,” Gronkowski said, fighting through tears. “But … I really was. And I was fighting through it. And I knew what I signed up for and I knew what I was fighting through, and I knew I just needed to fix myself.”

Gronkowski said his focus now is on achieving optimal health, and that a return to the NFL is not in the cards in the coming weeks or the next month.

However, Gronkowski left the door open to a return to playing football, if he feels healthy enough at a later date.

“I truly believe I can get to another level with my body, and I’m just in the first stage right now,” Gronkowski shared. “When that time comes down in the future, if I have the desire to play football again, if I feel passionate about football again, if I’m feeling like I need to go back on the field, I will go back to football. But as of right now, that is not the case. It could be the case in six months, it could be the case in two years, it could be the case in three years, it could be the case in three months. But I truly don’t see it in the foreseeable future, in like a week or a month. No. I want to do a different chapter of my life right now.”

Gronkowski shared a personal story about the types of injuries he played through, discussing a hit to his quad he endured during a Super Bowl. Gronkowski finished the game and won a championship, but that was jut the start of the pain.

“I was in tears in my bed after a Super Bowl victory. … It didn’t make much sense to me,” Gronkowski said. “I couldn’t sleep for more than 20 minutes a night, after a Super Bowl win. And I was like damn, this sucks. It didn’t feel right.”

Gronkowski said that in three separate hospital visits, 1000 milliliters of blood was drained from his leg.

“It’s not normal. It was like record-breaking at the hospital,” Gronkowski said. “I was like, you know I like to break records — which I do, I think I broke records on and off the field non-stop, with injuries and everything. That’s what I do.”

Tuesday’s press conference was initially announced on Aug. 13, immediately leading to speculation regarding what Gronkowski’s “next chapter” might be.

Gronkowski, who turned 30 in May, retired from football after completing his ninth season. He was originally drafted in the second round of the 2010 draft by the Patriots, for whom he caught 521 passes for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns during his Hall of Fame career. He also added 81 playoff receptions for 1,163 yards and 12 touchdowns in 16 games played, helping the Patriots to wins in both Super Bowl XLIX and LIII.

Talk of a potential Gronkowski retirement began during the offseason prior to the 2018 season, but Gronkowski ultimately decided to play. He announced his retirement in late March of this year, after making a diving catch to set up the game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl LIII against the Rams.

Gronkowski also announced a new name for himself.

“Now, you can just call me Mr. Recovery,” Gronkowski said. “You know you like that name. Mr. Recovery, baby!

At 165,000 patients, Empower Clinics (CBDT:CSE) (EPWCF:OTCQB) has a database that almost every medical cannabis and CBD company would kill for.  Add in the fact it is now on a ~ $USD 4,000,000 annualized revenue run rate for 2019 and it becomes the kind of company small cap investors have been dying to find.

But it doesn’t end there.

The Company is set to expand rapidly by taking its proven model into the franchise world for rapid expansion across the USA, with 4 applications already received in the last 30 days, as well as, launch its CBD extraction facility with an initial capacity of 6,000 Kg per year.   But it doesn’t end there.

The Company’s new CEO, Steven McAuley, who replaced the previous management team in January, is Six Sigma certified under the quality initiative of legendary GE chairman Jack Welch. We’ve never seen a Six Sigma certified CEO in the Canadian small cap markets. Never.

Grab your favourite cold beverage here in hot August and settle in for what may be your next great small cap investment.
