A #Cannabis Pioneer with Strong Value & Upside Potential – NORTHBUD $NBUD.ca $CGC $ACB $APH $CRON.ca $HEXO.ca $TRST.ca $OGI.ca

Posted by AGORACOM-JC at 2:27 PM on Wednesday, September 11th, 2019

If there’s one thing investors don’t like, its surprises with their stocks. A nice easy story is often elusive, but when it appears, it should be noted for the value it offers.

That’s the theme behind Canadian cannabis producer NORTH BUD Farms Inc. (CSE: NBUD, OTCQB:NOBDF, Forum). At a time when the industry is looking to “Legalization 2.0” as an incoming wave of new cannabis-infused products, there is also a new type of cannabis company emerging. In this case, with NBUD, it boasts the merit of being one of the very lowest market caps of any cannabis operator on the Canadian Securities Exchange at around $15 million as of early September 2019.

Trading at less than 1X its 2020 projected revenue in Canada alone, the Company is one of the most reasonably-priced operators. Its chief asset: A purpose-built facility with projected yields and revenues coming down the pipeline next year. As a one-off Canadian licensed producer (LP), it offers a clean prospect. In an interview talking about his Company with Stockhouse Editorial, CEO Ryan Brown described the mindset behind NORTHBUD brand:

“Every time someone buys a NORTHBUD product, I want them to feel like they bought a case of Heineken and they paid the price of Budweiser for it.”

CEO Brown laid out the Company’s strategy through three questions that help define NBUD’s goals:

  • Who is our audience?
  • What do they consume?
  • What do they have to build to efficiently and cost-effectively produce those products for that consumer?

As covered in an August 2019 feature article on Stockhouse and its recent coprorate update video, NORTHBUD has completed construction of its 24,500 square foot Phase One indoor cannabis cultivation facility located on 135 acres of land in Low, Québec. The Company is also looking to use part of its outdoor crop for pharmaceutical and food-grade cannabis applications. More on this facility later.

(NORTHBUD facility.)

Growing Market Opportunity:

Share prices among cannabis companies have been hit hard, but that doesn’t mean the industry is going away. The next opportunity is still out there. As we approach a year post-legalization in Canada, the risk / reward scenario for a lot of operators looks much clearer.

With NORTHBUD, the Company presents rewards that are quite tangible when looking at the grand scheme of investing in cannabis, with really no greater risk than any other company. While other operators struggle to meet demand for products, this is a clean operator with a straightforward story about a stock moving quickly in a green direction, rather than into the red.

The “2.0” philosophy is about more than just legalizing a new type of cannabis product or greater availability for dried flower, but it is also about new company structure, how they’re built-out, financed and how this shapes their market caps. An investor doesn’t have to look very far to find a licensed cannabis company of a comparable size to NBUD trading at even 2.5 – 3.5X their market value, but this is where the Company’s upside comes from. With other players in the field, there are often some “unlocks” with their shares that can take an investor by surprise. Since NBUD listed in September 2018, all of its shares are left on the table, basically unlocked, there’s no “Acreage scenario” where traders invest early and get slammed by insider unlocks. Company leadership took this into consideration when it decided to go public and is still trading around its IPO issue price in a tense market, which indicate it is on the right path from a business and investment perspective. An investor knows exactly what they are getting.

Product Timeline:

NORTHBUD is looking at a 2020 rollout for the release of its brand of flower to the market, which will be available as dried flower and pre-roll products. As a consumer-facing brand, its focus will be on a market demographic within the existing consumer base that is not currently buying from the legal market. The target is the 80% of consumers who go for “grey” and “white” market suppliers, which has been estimated to be worth roughly $3 billion, according to cannabis business accelerator Grow Tech Labs.

How NORTHBUD intends to penetrate that market, is by ensuring it always has a very favourable cost-to-value ratio. The Heineken quality for Budweiser price philosophy, at a time when many other companies are focused on premium products or the cheapest product in the biggest growing space, when a large portion of the market is looking for something else.

Facility:

NORTHBUD completed its Phase One indoor cannabis cultivation facility in August 2019 and submitted the facility’s Evidence of Readiness Package to Health Canada. As soon as shovels went into the ground, CEO Brown stated that efficiency and productivity were the main objectives when building this facility.

The objective here wasn’t to shove as much growth space into the building as possible, nor was it to make a claim that it has X-amount of growth space, just focus on tangible size for a Phase One project in a manner that would be conductive to producing good quality products.

What makes this project unique, is that it is built on a large piece of agricultural land, much larger than what is required for the Company’s operations now. It is currently using more than adequate space to produce a significant number of clones, while also being ready for outdoor planting come spring 2020. Instead of cramming the facility full of as much equipment as possible at the expense if workflow and employee comfort, NORTHBUD left room to expand and grow. This is a different approach for a cannabis operator, designing a functional production facility for a Company of this size.

Another benefit that should not be overlooked is the facility’s location, situated near the second largest hydroelectric dam in Québec. The Company strategically positioned its operation here to harness the low-cost advantages the province has over anywhere else in Canada.

Unlike other operators in the “1.0” cannabis phase who just wanted to get a building licensed and run a profitable company, NORTHBUD looked to the future and decided to place their facility in a rural setting before work began. Others are now looking for cheaper plots of land in rural settings as their urban operations have become too expensive to run.

CEO Brown noted that the facility was built to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, even though the Company has not applied to that certification but wanted to be following that standard with brand new, state-of-the-art equipment. From the start, the thought process was to build the facility with the target consumer in mind in the most economical way possible.

Company History:

Founded in June 2018 as a division of NORTHBUD Capital Holdings Ltd. (which is also one of the the Company’s largest investors), NBUD acquired a late-stage Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) application from Tetra Bio-Pharma Inc. (TSX: V.TBP). At the time, it was believed that there was value in legacy applications and if there was going to be any shakeups in the way Health Canada process the applications, NORTHBUD would be insulated by acquiring that application early, rather than starting from scratch. Since the federal government did just that when it put the Cannabis Act ahead and amended the criminal code, it was a solid plan in hindsight.

This legacy application was the start of the Company’s focus on efficient operations, as it provided the best environment to move forward in what has been considered a rather risky industry. The approach added security for both NORTHBUD but also its investors.

NORTHBUD raised capital through a variety of financing rounds, including an IPO at $0.25 cents a share and began construction at its facility.

CEO Brown was intrigued by the project while he was at Tetra. He has experience as an investor in cannabis and felt like he could offer a lot to building the Company and its brand, as opposed to solely focusing on investing into it. Now he comes back full-circle as an operator in this space, helping to grow the Company.

(NORTHBUD facility, aerial view.)

With an eye to close more deals in the near future, NORTHBUD is continuing to build its footprint across what it sees as the four largest markets in North America.

  • California – The largest cannabis market (expected to reach $3.1 billion in 2019 sales)
  • Nevada – Boasting a massive tourist advantage, the state has a high retail price, but devoid of a black-market supply
  • Canada – Estimated to be worth $5 billion by 2021

Investment Conclusion:

NORTHBUD Farms’ chief intent is to make sure its customers feel like they get more value out of these products than the money they spent. The customers will come to know what the brand feels like. This is how a legacy following is built – the type of consumer who knows what they are buying before they make that purchase.

These metrics are more straightforward to measure now that we approach a year’s worth of legal sales and can see where the sweet spots in the market exist. This is where NORTHBUD has targeted to operate.

The Company is run by individuals who are cannabis industry experts, not high tech or CPG types. They come from the cannabis industry and see this as their opportunity to be involved in bringing a successful Company to market, build a brand and get behind it. By the cannabis consumer for the cannabis consumer.

New Report Puts North American Cannabis Market At $47.3B By 2024

  • Market research and data analytics firm Prohibition Partners has released its first North American Cannabis Report.
  • The firm is estimating that by 2024, the continent’s cannabis market will be worth $47.3 Billion.
  • Big-name brands entering the game and celebrity endorsements are cited as important steps toward positioning cannabis as a mainstream product.

In the 134-page paper, the firm analyzes the current state of the cannabis industry in Canada and the United States to draw key insights into the industry’s future in the region.

The firm is estimating that by 2024, the continent’s cannabis market will be worth $47.3 Billion.

Daragh Anglim, the firm’s managing director, said the report offers good reason to believe that both medical and recreational cannabis will be completely legal in the entire region by that same year and â€œintegrated across a number of industry verticals from pharma to food.”

Key Insights

Although the report places Canada as a global leader and an example for countries looking to follow suit with cannabis legalization, it also said the U.S. could soon challenge its northern neighbor’s leadership.

Federal legalization could turn the scale around for the two countries.

Big-name brands entering the game and celebrity endorsements are cited as important steps toward positioning cannabis as a mainstream product.

A long-term decline in smoking and a stagnation in alcohol consumption are helping the cannabis sector accelerate through Big Tobacco and Big Alcohol investments and alliances, which are expected to continue to flourish, according to Prohibition Partners.

The cannabis industry is expanding within the beauty market, with many premium retailers offering cannabis products.

The edible revolution is expected to hit big, with great expectations around Canada’s legalization of cannabis edibles next month.

Publicly Listed Cannabis Companies

The number of cannabis companies listed on stock exchanges has increased substantially.

The CSE is by far the largest lister for cannabis companies, with 156.

Curaleaf (OTC: CURLF), Green Thumb Industries (OTC: GTBIF), Cresco Labs (OTC: CRLBF), Acreage Holdings (OTC: ACRGF) and Harvest Health & Recreation (OTC: HRVSF) top the CSE’s list in terms of market cap.

The TSX follows with 22 listed companies; NASDAQ with 15; and NYSE with nine, where the leaders in terms of market cap are Canopy Growth (NYSE: CGC), Aurora Cannabis (NYSE: ABC), The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE: SMG), Aphria (NYSE: APHA) and Hexo Corp. (NYSE: HEXO).

Current, Projected Cannabis Market Values

The estimated value for medicinal cannabis in both Canada and the U.S. today is of $10.6 billion, and that figure is expected to climb to $25.2 billion by 2024, the North American Cannabis Report said.

The recreational market is estimated at $6.5 billion, with a climb to $22.1 billion projected in five years. Both markets are projected to climb to a cumulative $47.3 billion in 2024, which would represent 177% growth.

Cannabis Consumers: Key Insights

In both countries, 22% of the population reported having consumed cannabis within the past 12 months.

In the U.S., 19% of users said they use cannabis products to relieve pain. In Canada, the average age of first-time consumption is almost 19 years old.

Canadian Cannabis Sales Growth: An Analysis

  • Statistics Canada released June data on cannabis retail sales last week. Nationwide, June retail sales hit $91.1M, which implies an annual run-rate of $1.1B in cannabis sales across Canada.

By: SmallCapPower

Statistics Canada reported that Canadian cannabis sales on a retail level for June continue to show growth across Canada, driven by new retail locations in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta

In Canada, unadjusted sales of cannabis in stores have grown by 120% between October 2018 and June 2019 (Figure 1). In our opinion, recreational cannabis sales are set to continue growing with the upcoming legalization of edibles expected in October 2019. With the increasing demand for cannabis products, there are concerns for Canada’s ability to avoid a supply shortage. For instance, Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, currently has 25 retail locations (plans to increase to 67 by October 2019). As it is a heavily-concentrated area for cannabis companies, with Canopy Growth and Aphria being headquartered in the province, there is the largest demand for cannabis at about 2.9M users. We believe that there are currently not enough retailers to meet demand and as more retailers come on-line,  nationwide sales are expected to increase.

Figure 1: Statistics Canada: Cannabis Legal Retail Sales

Source: Statistics Canada, Ubika

Based on Statistics Canada’s June retail sales data, retail sales are at the highest level since legalization back in October 2018 and have reached an annualized run-rate of $1.1B. Retail sales grew 6% month-over-month (MoM), a decrease of 900 basis points from the prior month. By our estimates this represents ~20% legal market penetration of the illicit market, as Statistics Canada reported that in 2018 total sales of cannabis in Canada totalled ~$6B.

Figure 2: Statistics Canada: Sales Figures by Province

Source: Statistics Canada, Ubika

There was an initial bump in retail sales in April 2019, which coincided with new store openings nationwide particularly in Ontario, but that growth seems to have tapered off in June. Notably, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia have seen MoM growth of 13%, 8%, 5%, and 18%, respectively, driven by 69 new brick-and-mortar retail locations opening from April to June (24 in Ontario, 2 in Quebec, 30 in Alberta, and 13 in British Columbia). Retail sales are expected to continue to increase as additional retail stores are added, particularly in Ontario. Currently, Ontario has approximately 1 store per 115,000 people, compared with Alberta, which has 1 store for every 10,000 people. Ontario has ~740 liquor stores (1 store/20,000 people) and Alberta has ~875 liquor stores (1 store/5000 people). We are of the opinion that Ontario could support ~1,500 cannabis retail stores, which would bring store saturation to ~1 store/10,000 people. Going into the second half of 2019, we expect steady growth in store openings, in particular Ontario, where the OCS has announced the 42 winners of the cannabis retail lottery, which will bring the total number of retail locations in Ontario to 67. This highlights that with an already underserved market, the provinces will have to start increasing the number retail locations per province to satisfy demand.

Bougainville Ventures Inc $BOG.ca – #Hemp industry awaits new #USDA rules $CROP.ca $VP.ca NF.ca $MCOA

Hemp industry awaits new USDA rules

  • Hemp was decriminalized in the 2018 Farm Bill thanks to legislation sponsored by Wyden, fellow Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
  • Wyden addressed the state of the hemp industry during a panel discussion Aug. 19 at the Western U.S. Hemp Growers Conference and Expo in Portland. He said Oregon is “at the epicenter of the enormous potential for the hemp in the country.”

By GEORGE PLAVEN

PORTLAND — New rules for growing and testing hemp are coming this fall from the USDA, and that has farmers anxious about establishing consistent standards for the booming crop.

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said the agency expects to issue regulations in the next two to four weeks.

Hemp was decriminalized in the 2018 Farm Bill thanks to legislation sponsored by Wyden, fellow Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Wyden addressed the state of the hemp industry during a panel discussion Aug. 19 at the Western U.S. Hemp Growers Conference and Expo in Portland. He said Oregon is “at the epicenter of the enormous potential for the hemp in the country.”

“We have an enormous sense of pride with the incredible growth in this industry, virtually overnight,” Wyden said.

Since 2014, the state has gone from 13 registered hemp growers and 105 acres to 1,883 growers and roughly 62,000 acres, according to the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 that passed Congress with bipartisan support — led by unlikely allies in Wyden, Merkley and McConnell — classified hemp as an agricultural commodity.

“I think it’s pretty obvious you are on the right side of history,” Wyden told the crowd gathered for the conference. “You don’t have thousands of farmers moving into this space for nothing.”

Hemp, like marijuana, is a cannabis plant, though it legally contains less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main ingredient that gets users high.

While hemp fiber can be used to make paper, textiles, clothing and building materials such as “hempcrete,” the current primary market is for products containing a derivative extract known as cannabidiol, or CBD. Companies are putting CBD in everything from cosmetics to beverages, touting numerous benefits.

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service is now developing a program to implement the Hemp Farming Act, which requires states and tribes as the primary regulators of hemp to comply with federal standards for testing THC levels, inspecting farms and monitoring overall production.

States will submit their detailed plans for approval once the regulations are announced, going into effect for the 2020 planting season.

Sunny Summers, cannabis policy coordinator for ODA, said Oregon already does testing and tracks production under the state’s hemp pilot program. Such pilot programs were permitted by the 2014 Farm Bill.

“This is not anything new,” Summers said. “We should be setting the standard for the country.”

The goal, Summers said, is to begin treating hemp the same as any other crop. But she said the industry still has challenges ahead, pointing to issues such as the potential for cross-pollination of crops, pesticide drift and managing odor.

“Coexistence is the backbone of Oregon agriculture,” Summers said. “The industry is going to have to come together and find those opportunities to coexist.”

Courtney Moran, a hemp lobbyist and president of the Oregon Industrial Hemp Farmers Association, said the USDA rules should clarify uncertainties for hemp growers and producers around interstate commerce, banking, crop insurance and law enforcement.

“No matter where you’re going, we want to make sure crops are legal and compliant,” Moran said.

The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for regulating and classifying CBD products. Wyden said he was told that could take three to five more years, which he pushed back against forcefully.

The government is starting to make progress implementing the Hemp Farming Act, Wyden said, but needs to move faster.

“CBD products have enormous potential. And that was the whole purpose of the bill,” Wyden said. “We don’t want to see that potential squelched because the feds are moving too slowly.”

Spyder #Cannabis $SPDR.ca – Alberta squeaks out title as Canada’s top cannabis market with $123.6M sold $CGC $ACB $APH $CRON.ca $HEXO.ca $OGI.ca

SPONSOR: Spyder Cannabis (SPDR:TSXV) went public just a couple of months ago and hit the ground running with 5 operating Canadian retail locations – and a 6th one on the way via an 8,000 sq ft super store in Alberta.  Most companies would be ecstatic to have this number of locations – but Spyder just announced a major move into the United States, with a 5 location deal for boutique stores up and down the US Eastern seaboard.  The news gets better.  If all goes well with these 5 locations, the US outlet partner has a total of 39 locations across 20 states for Spyder to grow into to. Click here for more info.

  • Albertans pull out their wallets for legal weed more often than other Canadians, new data shows.
  • Statistics Canada has published new information on the amount sold at cannabis store across the country, from legalization in October 2018 to June 2019.

The sales data shows that Alberta comes out as the top legal cannabis market in Canada, with more than $123.6 million in sales.

Alberta narrowly squeaked into the top spot with Ontario close behind at $121.6 million, followed by Quebec at $119.2 million.

‘Best job of any province,’ retailer says

Alberta’s quick pick-up in the cannabis market can be attributed to the province’s regulator â€” Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) — argues Darren Bondar, who runs a national chain of cannabis stores out of Calgary.

“Alberta and the AGLC have done the best job of any province in the country,” the Spirit Leaf CEO said.

He notes AGLC had experience with private liquor stores, which helped them co-ordinate the opening of 275 private cannabis vendors.

The province also runs a public website that sells and mails out cannabis products.

Ontario may soon surpass Alberta in sales, however. The province was slow in getting stores open but expects to see another 50 open this fall.

Another of Canada’s most populous provinces, British Columbia, saw slow sales, coming ninth on the list. Smaller provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, saw more money spent.

Canada’s first cannabis competition

Alberta can also boast the country’s first legal cannabis competition when Hempfest Expo opens this October in Calgary. A big draw for other international cannabis hotspots, like Colorado and Amsterdam, expectations for Hempfest Cup are high.

The competition runs Oct. 11-12 at Stampede Park, and will boast entries from big and little growers alike â€” even Canadians who are (legally) growing plants in their homes or yards. Registration for the event closes Sept. 12.
