Cryptocurrencies of all types make use of distributed ledger technology known as blockchain. Blockchains act as decentralized systems for recording and documenting transactions that take place involving a particular digital currency. Put simply, blockchain is a transaction ledger that maintains identical copies across each member computer within a network.

Any party is able to both review previous entries and record new ones, although most blockchain networks have complex rules for the addition of new groups of records, “blocks,” to the chain of previous records. The blocks and the contents within them are protected by powerful cryptography, which insures that previous transactions within the network cannot be either forged or destroyed. In this way, blockchain technology allows a digital currency to maintain a trusted transaction network without relying on a central authority. While blockchain is most famous for its role in facilitating the rise of digital currencies over the past several years, there are also many other non-cryptocurrency uses for this technology. Indeed, some blockchain proponents believe that the technology could far outpace cryptocurrencies themselves in terms of its overall impact, and that the real potential of blockchain is only just now being discovered. As such, it’s likely that financial advisors and many others in the investing world will encounter blockchain technology much more in the years to come, whether it is linked with a specific cryptocurrency or if it’s being utilized in any number of other applications. Below, we’ll explore some of the most exciting and popular use cases likely to bring blockchain further into the world of mainstream business and finance.

Cross-Border Payments

Traditionally, the transfer of value has been both expensive and slow, according to a report by Deloitte, and especially for payments taking place across international borders. One reason for this is that, when multiple currencies are involved, the transfer process typically requires multiple banks in multiple locations before the intended recipient can actually collect his or her money. There are existing services to help facilitate this process in a faster way, but these tend to by quite expensive.

Blockchain technology has the potential to provide a much faster and cheaper alternative to traditional cross-border payments methods. Indeed, while typical money remittance costs might be as high as 20% of the transfer amount, blockchain may allow for costs as low as 2%, as well as guaranteed and real-time transaction processing speeds. There are hurdles to be passed, including regulation of cryptocurrencies in different parts of the world and security concerns. Nonetheless, this is one of the most promising and talked about areas of blockchain technology application. Smart Contracts

Smart contracts are often seen as a highly powerful application of blockchain technology. These contracts are actually computer programs that can oversee all aspects of an agreement, from facilitation to execution. When conditions are met, smart contracts can be entirely self-executing and self-enforcing. For proponents of smart contracts, these tools provide a more secure, more automated alternative to traditional contract law, as well as an application that is faster and cheaper than traditional methods.

The potential applications of smart contract technology are essentially limitless and could extend to almost any field of business in which contract law would normally apply. Of course, while highly touted, smart contracts are not a magical substitute for old-fashioned diligence. In fact, the case of the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) is a cautionary tale and a warning to investors to not assume that smart contracts are any better than the information and organization that a user puts into them. Nonetheless, smart contracts remain one of the most exciting ways that blockchain technology has already extended beyond the cryptocurrency space and into the broader business world. Identity Management

One of the most problematic results of the internet age has been identity security. As diligent as many individuals and organizations are in maintaining their online identities and securing private information, there are always nefarious actors looking to steal and profit off of these digital items. Blockchain technology has already demonstrated the potential for transforming the way that online identity management takes place.

Blockchain offers a tremendous level of security, thanks to independent verification processes that take place throughout member computers on a blockchain network. In digital currency cases, this verification is used to approve transactions before they are added to the chain. This mechanism could just as easily be applied to other types of verification procedures, including identity verification and many other applications as well.

At this point, blockchain is a technology with an exceptionally broad set of potential uses. Although blockchain is most famous for its connections to the blossoming cryptocurrency world, several other applications have already been explored. Not all of us can make a living as professional gamers in the Overwatch League. But Justin Choy’s gig may be the next best thing. He’s the content marketing manager in charge of videos and social media for Gen.G, the esports organization that operates multiple teams — such as the Seoul Dynasty, one of the franchises in Activision Blizzard’s new Overwatch League.

It’s the kind of job that didn’t exist a generation ago, and the 28-year-old Choy is one of the few people who could do something like this, according to his boss, Arnold Hur, chief growth officer at Gen.G, which was formerly known as KSV eSports. As esports grows from $906 million in 2018 to $1.65 billion by 2021 (according to market researcher Newzoo), new kinds of jobs are being born in its ecosystem.

I think of it as the Leisure Economy, where we all will eventually get paid to play games. Besides people like Choy and Hur, the Leisure Economy already includes people like esports athletes, cosplayers, influencers, YouTubers, livestreamers, shoutcasters, and modders. There’s a broader group of accountants, lawyers, and other professionals who work for esports and game companies, and they’re also using their knowledge of games to prosper. The parents of these people probably cursed their obsession with video games, but that obsession has paid off handsomely for those who use it to become celebrities in our attention-based society.

People like Choy are still a rare group. Hur said it hasn’t been easy scouting for people in Los Angeles — the epicenter of esports, or playing games for money — who have the combination of skills that Choy has: online video skills, social media savvy, and a deep interest in games and esports. These weren’t the kinds of skills that Choy could pick up in college.

Rather, he developed the skills based on his own passions. Before he took the job at Gen.G, Choy was an online game fan and music-marketing expert. He is now in charge of managing a team of videographers and editors who shoot video footage of the Seoul Dynasty team. Their job is to capture amazing, cool, or funny gameplay and lifestyle videos of the pro gamers. They edit them down into snippets, share them on social media, and hope that they go viral.

“My job is less about video editing and more ideation on content pieces that will go viral,” said Choy in an interview with GamesBeat. “We try to tell the story of the team.”

For Gen.G, it’s all about generating a new revenue stream. Every week, the Seoul Dynasty plays competitive esports tournaments for the Overwatch League, which draws millions of views every week. Those viewers are mostly millennials who have a lot of disposable income but aren’t easy to find on traditional media channels, such as television.

Nielsen recently compared the esports demographic — about 70 percent male, ages 13 to 40 — to soccer fans, and it said they are “irresistible” to brand advertisers. But they’re hard for advertisers to target, as they only watch about four hours of TV per week. They spend twice as much time playing games.

But esports is still looking for its big revenue stream. Players, team owners, game publishers, investors, venues, and startups alike are looking for revenue from sponsorships, merchandise sales, media rights fees, game-publisher fees, advertising, and ticket sales. And if they can accumulate enough of an audience — one of the goals that Hur and Choy have been hired to make happen — the revenues will likely come.

“With traditional sports, an average fan spends about $50 per year,” Kent Wakeford, cofounder of Gen.G, said during a fireside chat at the GamesBeat Summit in Mill Valley, California, today. “With esports, it’s an average of $5. There’s this big gap, and if you can come in and close it. It’s this 10x opportunity.”

The video crew captures film in mini-documentary style so that fans can see what it’s like to be a competitive gamer at the highest level. The five-member starting squad plays every day at a team house, but they consume so much bandwidth that Choy can’t upload videos from the house. They go through roughly a terabyte of data in a week. And yes, they spend a lot of their time uploading and editing. That’s because they have to go through that sea of data and whittle it down to digestible bites.

Choy disperses the video team to their home locations, and they upload video to the cloud so that he can review it. Then, he offers his editing tips for finding the funniest videos and directs the video editors to chop down and edit the videos for publication. Once everything’s done, the team uploads the video to the social media sites, and Choy shares it as widely as possible on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Twitch, and Instagram.

The social media sites can magnify the awareness and influence of the team at relatively little cost. SuperData estimated that Twitch had more than 666 million viewers in 2017, more than Netflix or HBO.

The videos feature in-game coverage, lifestyle features on the players, matches, and match previews. The idea is to get fans exposed to the behind-the-scenes views of the players and their personalities.

“We try not to make it like reality TV, so it is as organic as possible, and the players are comfortable,” Choy said. “The common view is the players tend to be hermits. We need to tap into the personality that the internal staff knows that they have. They are funny and can spark up the room, and you need the right videographer to do that.”

It may seem like a bizarre subculture, but Choy was already part of it. Finding people like that with the talent to bring great attention to the sport is difficult, Hur said.

“There are a lot of people who say they love esports, but the rest of the resume has nothing,” Hur said. “For things like handling Twitch payments, there is almost zero experience in this field. It’s a huge challenge hiring people. We look for people who are good at what they are do and are super passionate. In L.A., there are talented video editors, but do they know what to show the audience? They aren’t teaching people how to do this in school.”

It helps that Hur speaks Korean, and Choy speaks some as well, as all of the star players are Korean on the team. South Korea is known as the birthplace of esports, and it’s the rare place where esports players are known as media superstars. The Overwatch League’s player base is about 40 percent Korean.

The videographers shoot the team in their own team house where they practice. Those videographers have to be in sync with the team on an emotional level, as they don’t want to air videos that make the team members upset and throw them off their game.

If the videos are captured while the players are speaking Korean, then the team has to write subtitles. Multitasking is a valuable skill. The pay could start at $50,000 for good editors, and then, it ramps up from there.

Choy tries to capture what the team is really like, and his gamer background helps with that. He has also applied his music background, getting the players to put out their own playlists for gaming music on Spotify.

“I understand the struggle where they start out low, grind through it to make it to the pros,” he said. “It’s not all about making a direct return on video investments. I want to make engaging content that the fans can connect with and show a different side of the players that the fans don’t see.”

Choy is part of a team that has about seven full-time and part-time people. There are other jobs coming. Gen.G is building an esports center in Seoul, and it is looking for people like interior designers, and it will likely have to figure out how to shoot videos of its other esports teams as well.

“Every big game or intellectual property will [need] its own social media manager and production team,” Hur said.

Eventually, sponsors will come into the picture, and that adds a layer of complexity to the “authenticity” of the social sharing, as brands don’t always like gamer footage that is too raw.

Overall, Choy and Hur like what they’re doing because they are pushing the edge of social media by embracing technology.

“We know there’s some interesting technology out there to identify highlights in videos,” Hur said. “New industries can be born. You have to be adept at the latest tech platform.”

Choy added, “It’s part of a passion. It doesn’t [feel] like work.”

The reign of renewable energy

The report found that more electricity was being generated by newly built solar panels than by any other method, surpassing wind, coal, gas and nuclear power for that year.

One reason for solar’s rise may be its cost. Renewable energy like wind and solar are now cost-competitive almost everywhere and are expected to become even cheaper. Whereas hydro power requires dams and other infrastructure, and biofuels require vast amount of crop residue, solar power and wind are virtually unlimited resources. The rise of wind and solar power has been so astronomical that other clean-energy technologies have only a limited chance of challenging their position for the next decade.

In 2018, BP forecasted a 400 percent growth in global renewable energy use by 2040, with solar power predicted to experience significant growth. Besides being cost-effective, solar power also ranks incredibly high in opinion polls. The Pew Research Center found in 2016 that “89 percent of Americans favor more solar panel farms,” while only nine percent oppose them.

Renewable countries and corporations

Helping to pave the way for a renewable energy future are corporations like Facebook (NASDAQ:FB). The globally-reaching company announced its aim to derive a minimum of 50 percent of its energy consumption from clean energy sources by 2018. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), in conjunction with Dominion Virginia Power, is also working with state officials to create a 20-megawatt solar project in the state.

In international rankings, the undisputed national leader in renewable capacity growth is China. The nation’s work towards counteracting air pollution due to industrial output has led to China accounting for the over 40 percent of global renewable capacity growth. Today, Chinese companies manufacture approximately 60 percent of all solar cells annually while China accounts for half of all solar photovoltaic power demand globally. The United States places second in the global rankings of solar power production, with Japan, India and Germany close behind.

Silicon in the EV revolution

Research by the Okinawan Institute of Science and Technology found silicon to offer “great advantages over carbon graphite for lithium batteries in terms of capacity,” adding that, although six atoms of carbon are needed to bind a single atom of lithium, a single silicon atom can bind four atoms of lithium simultaneously, essentially “multiplying the battery capacity by more than 10-fold.”

The downside to silicon anodes is that they expire more quickly, but companies like Sila Nanotechnologies are building prototypes which combine silicon and graphite to store as much as 20 to 40 percent more power than contemporary lithium-ion batteries, with BMW aiming to incorporate the technology into their designs by 2023.

Australian tech-firm 1414 Degrees announced in 2017 that they had designed a prototype molten silicon storage device which could easily surpass the Tesla 14KWh Powerwall 2 lithium ion battery’s capabilities. According to the company’s chairman, Kevin Moriarty, the prototype could store roughly 36 times as much energy while being roughly the same size as Tesla’s design.

Silicon in the energy metals market

In March 2018, Fortune reported that the transition from lithium-ion batteries to lithium-silicon could someday increase rechargeable battery life by as much as 30 percent, resulting from silicon anodes’ ability to hold more charge than their graphite counterparts.

Thanks to the EV revolution, the lithium, vanadium and cobalt markets are also greatly benefiting from the shift towards zero-emissions energy. The advantage silicon holds over its competitors, however, is its abundance.

Cobalt, one component of lithium-ion batteries, is seeing an uptick in interest in 2018. Prices rose in the first quarter thanks to an increasing demand from the battery sector, alongside more traditional uses of cobalt in superalloys. However, over fifty percent of the metal is sourced from the conflict-stricken DRC where questionable labor practices and a lack of transparency are commonplace. Coupled with increased mining royalties and an insurgency in the east, unease over cobalt supply abound.

The lithium market faces different concerns, namely potential oversupply, as well as the sector’s history of delays in mine ramp ups and processing problems. Addressing investors’ concerns at the 2018 PDAC convention, Alex Laugharne, a principal consultant at CRU Group, said the lithium market is “moving from a deficit into a sort of fairly balanced situation through 2018 to 2019, and that will keep prices relatively well elevated around where they are at moment.”

Augusta Industries Inc. and Mooncor Oil & Gas Corp. have entered into a letter of intent pertaining to the sale of FOX-TEK Canada Inc. by Augusta to Mooncor for an aggregate purchase price of up to $21.5-million.

$9,500,000 of the Purchase Price will be satisfied through the issuance of an aggregate of 47,500,000 post-consolidated common shares (the “Consideration Shares”) in the capital of Mooncor at a price of $0.20 per Consideration Share. The balance of the Purchase Price, being up to $12,000,000, will be satisfied through a royalty of 15% on all future sales of FOX-TEK’s products and a 20% royalty on all future sales of FOX-TEK’s services (collectively, the “Royalty”). The Royalty shall be payable until the earlier of (i) the 10 year anniversary of the closing of the acquisition of FOX-TEK, and (ii) the aggregate payment of $12 million.

Pursuant to the LOI, FOX-TEK and Sensor Technologies Inc. (“Sensor”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mooncor, will enter into an amalgamation agreement (the “Agreement”) whereby FOX-TEK will amalgamate with Sensor to form a new company (“AmalCo”). Both Augusta and Mooncor will receive shares in AmalCo as a result of the amalgamation. Augusta will transfer its securities in the capital of AmalCo to Mooncor in exchange for the Consideration Shares. As a result of the amalgamation, and the issuance of the Consideration Shares, FOX-TEK will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Mooncor. It is the intention of Augusta to distribute a portion of the Consideration Shares to its shareholders at a later date.

The Acquisition

Shareholders of Augusta will be asked to approve the Acquisition at the special meeting of shareholders scheduled for July 12, 2018. The proposal to be presented to shareholders would result in the sale of FOX-TEK to Mooncor.

Mooncor will be calling a special meeting of its shareholders to approve, among other things, the Agreement and the consolidation of its issued and outstanding common shares on a the basis of up to twenty (20) common shares for each existing common share. It is anticipated that Mooncor will file an application with the TSX Venture Exchange to approve the issuance of the Consideration Shares to Augusta pursuant to the Agreement.

No finder’s fee is payable with respect to this transaction.

Related Party Transaction

The transaction between Augusta and Mooncor is a non arm’s length transaction as Allen Lone is a director and officer of both Augusta and Mooncor. Mr. Lone owns, directly and indirectly, 6,920,000 common shares (4.13%) in the capital of Mooncor and 76,754,264 common shares (29.97%) in the capital of Augusta. As such it is a related party transaction subject to Multilateral Instrument 61-101 Protection of Minority Security Holders in Special Transactions (“MI 61-101”). Pursuant to MI 61-101, Augusta and Mooncor may be required to obtain disinterested shareholder approval and a valuation of FOX-TEK.

/PRNewswire/ – MONARQUES GOLD CORPORATION (“Monarques” or the “Corporation”) (TSX.V:MQR) (OTCMKTS:MRQRF) (FRANKFURT:MR7) is pleased to report its results for the third quarter ended March 31, 2018. Amounts are in Canadian dollars unless otherwise indicated.

Highlights

Beaufor Mine

  • Production of 4,932 ounces in the third quarter, down 9% from 5,444 ounces the previous quarter due mainly to a planned shutdown for maintenance at the Camflo mill and to the breakdown of ore haulage equipment at the Beaufor Mine. The equipment was repaired and production resumed at the same pace as in the previous quarter.
  • A new ore haulage truck will be added on the Zone Q ramp towards the end of June. A Caterpillar AD-30 truck (see truck photo) will be lowered underground and reassembled at the Zone Q garage to increase haulage capacity in this area of the mine. This addition will strengthen Monarques’ truck fleet and avoid situations like the one that occurred in the quarter ended March 31.
  • Average selling price of $1,624 (US $1,284) per ounce sold ($1,602 or US $1,263 since the acquisition on October 2, 2017).
  • Production cash cost of $1,642 (US $1,298) per ounce sold ($1,490 or US $1,175 since the acquisition on October 2, 2017).
  • All-in sustaining cost of $1,782 (US $1,409) per ounce sold ($1,616 or US $1,274 since the acquisition on October 2, 2017) for Beaufor/Camflo.

Financial results

  • Revenues of $9.8 million in the third quarter from the sale of 4,823 ounces of gold combined with revenue from custom milling, which was up 17% for the quarter.
  • Net loss of $2.2 million or $0.010 per share, diluted, compared to a net loss of $0.7 million or $0.005 per share, diluted, last year.
  • Strong financial position, with cash of $18.1 million.

“Although our results for the quarter were below our expectations, they are the result of temporary issues that have been solved since,” said Jean-Marc Lacoste, President and Chief Executive Officer of Monarques. “Our production activities have been back to normal since April, and we foresee continued growth in our custom milling operations.”

“Furthermore, we are continuing to make progress on our other advanced projects, including Wasamac, Croinor Gold, McKenzie Break and Swanson, which are undergoing exploration work and technical studies, and for which we should have news in the coming weeks. We also expect to restart the Beacon plant at the end of 2018, which will enable us to increase our total production capacity to 2,350 tonnes per day. We are committed to continued growth in the production, resources and profitability ends of our business, and look forward to sharing the progress of our initiatives with our shareholders,” Mr. Lacoste added.

  • On February 8, 2018, Monarques announced a positive updated prefeasibility study for the Croinor Gold deposit (see press release).
  • On February 13, 2018, the Corporation announced that it was undertaking an NI 43-101 gold resource estimate for its McKenzie Break and Swanson properties. The Corporation has retained the services of Géologica of Val-d’Or for the McKenzie Break property and InnovExplo Inc. for the Swanson property (see press release).
  • On February 22, 2018, the Corporation announced that it will drill a total of 50,000 metres in 2018 at the Beaufor Mine and on the Croinor Gold property (see press release).
  • On March 12, 2018, the Corporation announced that it has closed a non-brokered private placement of units with the Government of Québec, through the Capital Mines Hydrocarbures fund managed by Ressources Québec, pursuant to which the Corporation had issued 12,820,513 units priced at $0.39 per unit for total gross proceeds of $5,000,000 (see press release).
  • On March 27, 2018, the Corporation reported new results that marked the end of its 2017 drilling program at the Beaufor Mine. The results were from a total of 7,157 metres of drilling in 52 holes, including 5 exploration holes (2,651 metres) and 47 definition drill holes (4,506 metres). The holes were drilled in multiple areas of the mine, including zones Q, QH2 and 32 and the 350H, 1700 and Granodiorite East projects (see press release).
  • On March 28, 2018, the Corporation announced that it had filed an NI 43-101-compliant technical report for its Croinor project on SEDAR (see press release).
  • On April 5, 2018, the Corporation announced that it had retained BBA to conduct a conceptual study for the transportation of gold-bearing material from the Wasamac deposit to an existing processing plant with an authorized tailings management facility in the region for custom milling (see press release).
  • On May 17, 2018, the Corporation announced that it had decided to start up its Beacon mill in Val-d’Or, located on Route 117, within 500 metres of the railway line and less than 10 km from the Beaufor Mine. The Corporation has allocated a budget of $1.5 million to upgrade the facility, and expects to commission the 750 tonne-per-day plant in the last quarter of 2018 (see press release).

Projects under way

  • Monarques’ goal for the coming quarters is still to increase the profitability of the Beaufor Mine, mainly by reducing production costs and improving grade through the use of a more selective mining method. The production cost cuts will also be achieved through higher productivity at the Camflo plant with the increase in custom milling activities.
  • The Corporation has also decided to restart the Beacon mill, as it foresees growing demand for custom milling services. It expects to be able to commission its 750 tonne-per-day plant in the last quarter of 2018.
  • Monarques is pursuing its programs of 30,000 metres of drilling on the Beaufor Mine and 20,000 metres of drilling on the Croinor Gold deposit, and will release the first set of results as soon as they become available.
  • The Corporation also started 43-101 resource estimates for its McKenzie Break and Swanson gold projects, with the results expected in June.
  • Finally, the Company is considering several options for the development of the Wasamac gold deposit, including custom milling and use of the rail network (less than 500 metres from the Wasamac site).
