AGORACOM Interview: Bob Moriarty Says Graphite Is For Real & Gold Juniors Poised For 500% Gains

Posted by AGORACOM at 2:56 PM on Monday, March 26th, 2012

I’m very pleased to announce the completion of an interview with Bob Moriarty, one of the junior resource industry’s most respected commentators whose market thoughts can be found at 321gold.com and 321energy.com.   More than just a market commentator, I look forward to reading Bob Moriarty’s comments because he simply isn’t one to sit on the fence and hedge his words.  He makes a call and says it like it is.

This rare trait most likely stems from the fact that Bob was trained to make split-second life or death situations as a young man.  Specifically, Moriarty was a Marine F-4B pilot at the age of twenty and a veteran of over 820 missions in Vietnam. Becoming a Captain in the Marines at 22, he was one of the most highly decorated pilots in the war. He went on to ferry General Aviation aircraft all over the world for 15 years with over 240 over the water deliveries. He holds 14 International Aviation records including Lindbergh’s record for time between New York to Paris in two different categories.

As such, when someone like Bob Moriarty speaks, it behooves all of us to listen.  So what did we talk about today?

1. Why the explosion of interest, investment and growth in new graphite mine development? Is it for real?

2. Why graphite is an analog of oil.

3. Why the present ratio of the XAU (Philly Gold and Silver Index) over gold almost guarantees a 500% return on gold shares over the next two years.

4. Why the banking system is going to collapse / The implications of $708 trillion dollars in derivatives.

5. Middle East tension

This was a great interview.  One of the best we’ve had with a major market commentator, which have included the likes of  Eric Sprott, JF Tardif, Barry Ritholtz , Paul Kedrosky and Eric Coffin.  What made it one of our better ones? Though I agree with much that Bob had to say, I challenged him by playing Devil’s Advocate and arguing the case as presented by Wall Street and the mass media.  Though Bob didn’t budge and argued his case even harder, he was kind of enough to tell me how pleased he was with the interview.

The ultimate judge will be you, so listen in on the first few minutes and see if it carries you through to the fireworks at the end.

On behalf of myself and the entire listening audience, I want to thank Bob for taking time out of his Sunday to speak with us.

Regards,

George

Cheap China Stocks – China Botanic Pharmaceutical Trading At 1.2X EPS

Posted by AGORACOM at 9:54 AM on Monday, March 19th, 2012

The problems with some Chinese Reverse Merger companies are well documented …. but if there was ever an example of babies being thrown out with the bathwater, it is the valuation hits being taken by all Chinese small-caps across the board.   There is no doubt that investors are going to have to be vigilant about any investments made in the space … but one can’t ignore the fact that some incredible opportunities are now presenting themselves as well.

CHINA 2.0

Borrowing from the concept of Web 2.0, in which we saw the implosion of the dot-com bubble, followed by the resurgence of “real” dot-coms and massive subsequent share gains, I fully expect to see the same thing happen with Chinese small-cap stocks.  Specifically, we’re going through the implosion of China 1.0 small-cap stocks right now, thanks in large part to reverse merger frauds.  This won’t last forever.  Eventually – and we are well on our way there –  the scam companies will be discovered and dismissed.

When the dust settles, we are going to find two kinds of companies.  First, existing “real” companies trading at ridiculously cheap valuations.  I see massive gains being made in these companies over the next 24 months (think Aamzon and eBay).  Second, we are going to see new “real” companies starting to list on American Exchanges with great fundamentals and fast growth stories (think Google and LinkedIn).

Investors that keep their eyes and due diligence open today stand to potentially make Web 2.0 style gains in the coming years from cheap Chinese small cap stocks.

Below are just a few I’ve discovered over the past year … and I’m going to keep a rolling list going forward. Today’s new addition is China Botanic Pharmaceuticals (see my notes below)

If you wish to see original entries for each of these companies, just click on my Cheap China Small Cap Stocks category to see each entry and accompanying notes.  Moreover, I have covered these companies on Chinese Small-Cap TV (Today’s Show) (Archives).

CONCLUSION

Babies are being thrown out with the bathwater in the Chinese Small-Cap Space. I don’t see any need to rush into them as I expect this period of lost confidence to extend into the late summer at the very least. On the other hand, I see plenty of reason to begin building positions in these and other candidates over the next few months for long-term holds.

COMPANY Q EPS EPS (EXTRAPOLATED) PRICE P/E
China ACM (CADC) $0.19  May 13 $0.76 $2.34 3.1
US China Mining (SGZH) $0.22  May 16 $0.88 $4.00 4.5
China Industrial Waste (CIWT) $0.08 May 16 $0.32 $1.08 3.4
China Green Material (CAGM) $0.04 May 16 $0.16 $0.66 4.0
China BCT Pharmacy (CNBI) $0.16 May 16 $0.64 $2.40 3.8
Nutrastar Int’l (NUIN) $0.18 May 16 $0.72 $3.00 4.2
China TMK Battery (DFEL) $0.09 May 17 $0.36 $0.55 1.5
HQ Global Education Inc. $0.15 July 15 $0.60 $0.36 0.6
China Botanic Pharma. $0.33 Mar 19 $0.88 guidance $0.75 1.2

You will note I have a column for “extrapolated” EPS over the entire year. This assumes these companies will continue to generate EPS at the pace on the day we covered them. Yes, this is a major assumption … but it also assumes these companies won’t be increasing EPS over the current fiscal year as well.   That’s  a pretty big trade off considering they are more likely to grow EPS than remain stagnant or even drop.

With those assumptions out of the way, the prevailing theme seems to be P/E multiples of ~ 3.5X. That is damn cheap for any company, let alone companies that are growing their top and bottom lines by 40, 50, 60, even 100%.

In the case of of China Botanic Pharmaceutical, the company has actually provided earnings guidance of ~ $33,000,000 for 2012.  That translates into about $0.88 EPS for fiscal 2012.  At a current price of just $0.75 the company is trading at 1.2 X EPS.   That is not a typo …. 1.2

CHINA BOTANIC PHARMACEUTICAL NOTES

The company released their Q1 numbers for the period ended January 31, 2012.  Here are the highlights:

First Quarter 2012 Highlights

  • Net sales increased 24.4% year over year to $28.1 million
  • Gross profit increased 25.4% to $17.3 million from $13.8 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2011
  • Gross margin increased to 61.6% from 61.1% in the year ago period
  • Net income rose 12.4% to $12.3 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, from $10.9 million, or $0.29 per diluted share, in the first quarter of fiscal 2011

At a market cap of just $28,000,000 as of Friday, the company is ridiculously cheap by ever metric.  For example, it is essentially trading at 1X revenue after just the first quarter of revenue.  Add that to 1.2X EPS at this point and CBP is super cheap.

Financial Condition

As of January 31, 2012, China Botanic had cash of approximately $21.4 million and total current assets of approximately $70.6 million. The Company had working capital of approximately $56.9 million on January 31, 2012, as compared to $40.8 million at the fiscal year end of October 31, 2011.

If the company has $21.4 million in cash on hand, you are buying the actual business for just $7,000,000 ($28M market cap – $21M cash)., which makes the revenue multiple and EPS multiples above so cheap it is almost embarrassing.

Business Outlook

For fiscal year 2012, China Botanic reaffirms its guidance of revenues of between $91.6 million and $93.1 million, representing an increase of 26% to 28% over fiscal year 2011 revenue of $72.7 million. Revenue growth is expected to be driven largely by sales volume increases from the existing product portfolio. The Company expects net income to be in the range of $32.7 million to $33.2 million

Not only are you buying the current company at embarrassingly cheap multiples, you are also buying its growth for even less.

CONCLUSION

Unless China Botanic Pharmaceutical is about to be shut down as a major reverse merger fraud scam, investors stand to make a lot of money from any investment in it.

* I have no share position or affiliation with the company.  I would really like to change that on both fronts over the coming weeks and months.

George

$TSXV Week in Review

Posted by AGORACOM at 5:52 PM on Sunday, February 26th, 2012

The $TSXV had another strong week. I was definitely looking for a correction, but that has yet to materialize – we may just rock ‘n’ roll into PDAC. I remain confident that the good issuers will prevail and the cream will rise in addition to certain hot sectors like Graphite and precious metals that will bring volume in. I am also keeping a close eye on Uranium and some interesting biotech issues.

There are a few points that I noticed this week that stood out:

  • Market Internals: Long side momentum players and the “Jitney Magic Men”(broker code 99 that takes out those key levels in the blink of an eye) are all over issues with good news and price levels to be taken out.
  • Risk Appetite: There is a sense that the worst is behind us and money is flowing into the speculative issues. There is money available to fiance projects of merit. Retail can follow this via http://canadianfinancing.com/
  • The CRB Index: The CRB index is crossing it’s 200EMA and is trending very nicely.

Here is where the $STXV stands going into Monday morning:

I’d like to see some larger trading ranges and divergence added to the MACD but I will take the levitation. I want to see that ADX continue to rise and would love to see more volume in this market.

By the way has anyone else been hearing about Zinc? Is it just me or it starting to make noise again?

$FIS.CA Fission Energy Corp.

Posted by AGORACOM at 4:17 PM on Sunday, February 26th, 2012

Fission Energy ($FIS.CA) has been doing quite nicely lately with positive news hitting the wire for the last few weeks. They have increased their exploration budget, staked more ground and announced Three Step-Out Holes with “Off-Scale” Radioactivity.

Uranium has been under pressure since the Japanese distater last April but recovering nicely as of late with names across the board putting up nice gains.

I mentionned $FIS.CA a few weeks ago with good reason, here’s the chart… looks sexy!

Sad News: David Coffin Passes Away Suddenly. Message From Brother Eric

Posted by AGORACOM at 11:15 AM on Sunday, February 19th, 2012

David Coffin, one half of the dynamic duo behind Hard Rock Advisories, has passed away suddenly.  Please find enclosed a brief note issued by his brother Eric, who clearly demonstrates how much love and friendship these brothers share for each other. Our condolences to the Coffin family.

The Hardest Thing I’ve Ever Written February 17th, 2011

It is with great shock and incredible sadness that I inform you of the passing of my brother, David Coffin. David died suddenly on February 16th, 2012. David would have appreciated the irony of me trying to sum up his life so soon after he did such a wonderful job of summing up our father’s. I only hope I can do some justice to David’s eloquence one day soon, though I know I won’t be able to. I’ll save a full obituary for another day.

HRA will continue but not right away. I need to be there for our mother and the rest of our family and my family and help deal with David’s affairs. For that reason I will not be publishing anything for at least 2-3 weeks. I will extend everyone’s subscription by two months to cover whatever service interruption will occur. I am making calls to close friends. I know that some of you will want to call, but I would appreciate it if you could contact me by email for the time being as I will be with our mother. David and I both loved our jobs and loved getting to know so many of you. Dave would want me to continue so that is what I plan to do. I would want him to do the same if the situation was reversed.

I’m sure many of you can appreciate that this is very hard for me right now. I’ve just lost both my brother and my best friend. When I have details of David’s service worked out I will send them around. Likewise, several of David’s friends have talked about arranging some sort of memorial get together for him. That probably won’t happen for a few weeks but, again, once details are set I will send those along as well. Thank you again for your understanding and for being our readers and our friends.

Regards for now – Eric
